Iowa Cubs News Release

Sacramento, CA - Rodrigo Lopez and three relief pitchers combined to allow just four hits in the Iowa Cubs (17-20) 3-1 win over the Sacramento River Cats (25-14) at Raley Field tonight. The Cubs now lead this series 2-1 and are 5-2 on this road trip with one game to play.

Anthony Rizzo gave the Cubs the early lead with a first-inning home run off River Cats' starter Travis Banwart. It was Rizzo's league-leading 12th home run of the season. The Cubs added to that lead in the top of the fifth. Blake Lalli led off with a long home run to center. Ty Wright, Juan Apodaca, and Alfredo Amezaga followed with consecutive singles to extend the Cubs' lead to 3-0.

Lopez (1-0) allowed the River Cats' only run in the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out, Brandon Hicks singled and stole second. With two outs, Luke Hughes hit a fly ball to medium-depth left-center field. Brett Jackson lost the ball in the twilight sky and Wright couldn't get there in time from left, so the ball fell in for an RBI double. Lopez would catch Jermaine Mitchell looking at strike three for his fourth strikeout to end the inning.

Jay Jackson fanned four in two scoreless innings. Hughes was called out on strikes for the second time in the game in the seventh and was ejected from the game after arguing the call. Nate Robertson set down the side in order in the eighth and Scott Maine was perfect in the ninth for his second save of the season.

The Cubs and River Cats wrap up this series tomorrow afternoon at 2:05 Central Time at Raley Field. RH Randy Wells (2-1, 6.75) is scheduled to start for the Cubs against RH Bruce Billings (2-1, 2.22) for the River Cats. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 1:45.
