Peoria Chiefs News Release

Cedar Rapids, IA - The Peoria Chiefs scored five runs in the sixth inning and picked up their second win in a row on Sunday afternoon with a 7-1 victory over the Cedar Rapids Kernels. The Chiefs have clinched the series and go for the sweep on Monday with a second half record of 7-10 and an overall mark of 40-47.

Both teams had early opportunities but lost runners on the basepaths. The Chiefs had Sergio Burruel thrown out at the plate after a double by Rubi Silva in the third inning and Cedar Rapids left runners on in the first two frames.

Starling Peralta got himself in trouble with two outs in the third inning when he hit Rolando Gomez. Jeremy Cruz drew a walk and Ricky Alvarez singled home Gomez for the 1-0 Kernels lead. Newcomer Ben Klafczynski threw Cruz out at third base to end the inning with the Chiefs trailing by a run.

Once the Kernels went to the bullpen and replaced A.J. Schugel with Seth Fowler, the Chiefs went to work in the sixth inning. Silva led off with a single to right and with one down Ryan Cuneo singled to center. Greg Rohan doubled down the right-field line as Silva scored to tie the game and Cuneo stopped at third. Richard Jones put the Chiefs on top 3-1 with a two-run double off the center-field wall. With two down, Klafczynski launched a two-run homer over the left-field wall for a 5-1 Peoria lead. Klafczynski, who joined the Chiefs Saturday from Short-Season Boise, homered for the Hawks on July 1 for his first professional home run.

Robinson Lopez returned from the disabled list and took over for Peralta with two outs in the sixth. Lopez kept the Kernels from adding anymore runs with a double play to end the seventh inning before Klafczynski singled home Jones to put the Chiefs on top 6-1. A bases loaded wild pitch in the ninth plated Silva for a 7-1 Chiefs lead as Daniel Berlind threw two scoreless innings out of the Chiefs bullpen.

Peralta (1-1) threw a career-high 5 2/3 innings and allowed just one run on four hits. He struck out three and walked two while earning his third career win. Lopez pitched for the first time since June 15 and allowed two hits and a walk over 1 1/3 shutout innings. Berlind threw two scoreless frames and allowed two singles.

Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Ben Klafczynski (LF) - In his first game in a Chiefs uniform, Klafczynski homered, drove in three and recorded an outfield assist. Klafczynski homered in the five-run sixth inning and added a RBI with a single in his next at-bat to finish 2-for-4 with three RBI.
