Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill. - Thanks to a combined five-hit shutout from Leonel Santiago and Chas Byrne and a timely two-out hit from Orlando Calixte, the Kane County Cougars edged the Clinton LumberKings, 1-0, on Friday night in front of 8,411 at Elfstrom Stadium. Santiago tossed his second straight shutout effort, and the Cougars snapped a three-game skid by claiming the opener of the three-game set.
Brian Fletcher led off the second inning with a double against Taijuan Walker (2-3) and took third on a wild pitch. That set up Calixte, who singled to right to score Fletcher for what became the game's only run. Calixte also singled and stole a base in the eighth, knocking out half of the Cougars' four hits.
Meanwhile Santiago (5-6) and Byrne cruised. Santiago posted his 10th quality start in 12 outings. All five hits he allowed were singles, and he walked none and fanned six. This was his third win against Clinton this season, and it was only the second win by a Cougars starting pitcher since May 28. Byrne handled the final three frames and had two flawless innings to earn his fourth save.
The Cougars (28-39) and LumberKings (22-46) continue the three-game set Saturday night at 6 CT. Yordano Ventura (1-1, 4.32) will pitch against Anthony Fernandez (1-2, 5.16). The game will be broadcast on WBIG 1280-AM and online via kccougars.com with pregame coverage starting at 5:45 p.m.
