
Snappers score five in the 8th to sink Kernels, 7-2

Beloit, WI - The Beloit Snappers scored five runs in the 8th inning to down the Kernels 7-2 at Pohlman Field on Thursday night. The game was tied 2-2 entering the 8th inning when the Snappers scored all five runs with two outs. With one out Michael Gonzales got the inning started for the Snappers by singling off of Kernels reliever Dakota Robinson. Daniel Santana pinch ran for Gonzales and stole 2nd base. Daniel Ortiz then flew out to center for the second out in the inning.
The Kernels elected to intentionally walk Jairo Perez, setting up a force play at any base. Left handed hitter Lance Ray then doubled off the wall in left center, scoring Santana and Perez to give Beloit a 4-2 lead. Tobias Streich then doubled down the line in right to score Ray, giving the Snappers a 5-2 lead. Tyler Kehrer then replaced Robinson on the mound. Kehrer walked the first two batters he faced to load the bases. Andrew Leer then singled up the middle, scoring two Snappers and extending the lead to 7-2.
Robinson (3-1) took the loss for the Kernels in relief. He went 2/3 inning and allowed four runs on three hits while walking one batter. Tyler Kehrer went 1/3 inning and allowed one run on one hit while walking two. Clinton Dempster (3-2) picked up the win for Beloit in relief. He went 1.1 innings and allowed no runs on two hits while striking out one.
Beloit scored the first run of the game in the 4th inning. Nate Roberts singled off Kernels starter Heath Nichols to begin the inning. Roberts stole 2nd base to get into scoring position. On two separate wild pitches, he reached 3rd base and then came home to give the Snappers a 1-0 lead. In the 6th inning the Snappers added another run. Michael Gonzales doubled and reached 3rd base on a sacrifice fly by Daniel Ortiz. With two outs, Jairo Perez hit a single to center that scored Gonzales and gave Beloit a 2-0 lead.
Nichols went six innings for the Kernels. He allowed two runs on six hits while striking out two and walking none. The Kernels evened the score 2-2 with two runs in the 7th inning against Snappers starter Adrian Salcedo. Rolando Gomez led off with a single and reached 2nd base on a wild pitch. Jeremy Cruz then walked. Runners were sent to 2nd and 3rd base on a sacrifice bunt by Ricky Alvarez. Gomez scored on a RBI sacrifice fly to left by Brandon Decker. Cruz advanced to 3rd base on the play and scored on a RBI single by Marcus Nidiffer, tying the game 2-2.
Salcedo went 6.2 innings for Beloit and allowed two runs on four hits while striking out seven and walking one. Donn Roach pitched one inning for the Kernels in relief and allowed no runs on one hit while striking out one. Michael Tonkin pitched one inning for Beloit, allowing no runs and no hits.
The Kernels conclude the first half of the season with a home series against Wisconsin, beginning Friday at 6:35 p.m. It's Hawkeye Sports Night as the Kernels will wear special black and gold Hawkeye jerseys that will be sold during the game via a silent auction with the proceeds to benefit the Linn County I-Club.
