MIDLAND, MI - The Great Lakes Loons capitalized on a pair of three-run innings Friday night to defeat the Fort Wayne TinCaps in a quick two-hour, eight-minute contest before a sell-out crowd of 5,450 fans at Dow Diamond. The win puts the Loons a half-game ahead of Lansing and in second place, bearing Lansing's result tonight, with two games to go.

The Loons first big inning transpired in the second, which was jump started by a Jon Garcia RBI-single to centerfield. Loons outfielder Preston Mattingly followed with an RBI-single of his own, and finally Leon Landry hit into a fielder's choice to score Garcia to make it 3-0 Loons.

The TinCaps clawed back to within one run, before the Loons again put up three in the sixth inning. Loons catcher Steve Domecus got things going with a run-scoring triple to right field and was brought in on a home run from Mattingly.

"I've been sticking with my same approach," Mattingly said after the game. "It's fun to play in these games when stuff matters, for the playoffs that we're trying to get in. So we just go out there and try and compete and find a way to get the team a win."

The Loons were up 6-2 through six innings and added one more to the tally with a solo home run from Jon Garcia. Garcia and Mattingly each hit a home run in Thursday night's win over the Captains as well. The Loons totaled 11 hits to the TinCaps 5.

From the mound, Loons starter Garrett Gould turned in a solid six innings to limit Fort Wayne to two runs, one earned, on four hits. The right-handed pitcher tossed six strikeouts to two walks en route to notching his seventh win. Reliever Bret Montgomery picked up the save, his third, by pitching a final three scoreless innings for the Loons. Montgomery allowed only one hit, fanning three and walking none.

Game two of their three-game series against the TinCaps will be Saturday at 7:05 p.m. RHP Red Patterson (4-4, 3.80) will get the start for the Loons against Fort Wayne's southpaw Mark Hardy (3-5, 2.42). Following the game will be one of Dow Diamond's Fireworks Loontaculars powered by Dow Corning. It will also be a Deloitte K's for Kids Night with K-cards distributed at the gates.

The Great Lakes Loons are a fifth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and members of the Midwest League. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
