Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
MIDLAND, Mich. - The TinCaps never led in a 7-2 defeat against the Great Lakes Loons, Friday at Dow Diamond. Jake Blackwood had a pair of hits including a double.
Fort Wayne went 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
In the second, the Loons received a leadoff infield hit from Joe Becker. After a walk to Christian Lara, Jon Garcia roped an RBI single to center to make it 1-0. Two batters later, Preston Mattingly singled to make it 2-0. An RBI groundout extended the deficit to 3-0.
The TinCaps got on the board in the top of the third. B.J. Guinn led off with a drag bunt for a base hit. Chris Bisson followed with a bunt that was fielded quickly, but a throw to second was wild and went into center field allowing Guinn to sprint to third base. Oscar Garcia then grounded into a double play to bring home a run and make it 3-1.
In the fifth, Bisson smacked a triple to right-center and scored when Garcia stroked the next pitch into right for an RBI single, cutting the margin to 3-2.
The Loons blew it back open in the sixth. Becker led off with an infield hit; three batters later, Steve Domecus hit a shot to right which bounced off the glove of the right fielder and was scored an RBI triple. Mattingly followed by hitting a two-run homer over the right-field wall to make it 6-2.
Jon Garcia unloaded in the bottom of the eighth, hitting a tape-measure home run to finish the scoring at 7-2.
Fort Wayne LHP Andrew Werner (2-6) absorbed the loss; Great Lakes RHP Garett Gould (7-2) was the winning pitcher and RHP Bret Montgomery nabbed a save by delivering three scoreless innings in relief.
The TinCaps fell to 29-38; Great Lakes improved to 38-29.
The TinCaps and Loons (Class-A Los Angeles Dodgers) continue the three-game series Saturday at 7:05 p.m. Fort Wayne LHP Mark Hardy (3-5) goes to the mound against Loons RHP Red Patterson (4-4).
