Chiefs Lose Again, 4-1 Friday

Davenport, IA - The Peoria Chiefs suffered yet another setback on Friday with a 4-1 loss to the Quad Cities River Bandits to open the final series of the first half. The loss drops the Chiefs to 33-35 on the half as Quad Cities moves one step closer to the first half wild card.

Peoria jumped to an early lead in the second against Quad Cities starter Zach Russell. Greg Rohan led off the frame with a long solo homer on a full-count offering. The fifth homer of the season from the Chiefs' All-Star third baseman cleared the berm and walk-way beyond the left-field wall.

Quad Cities evened the game against Hayden Simpson in the bottom of the inning. Nick Longmire led off with a double and moved to third on a one-out single by Jonathan Rodriguez. The Bandits tied the game 1-1 on a sacrifice fly to center by Chris Edmonson.

The Chiefs fell behind in the third inning after a two-out walk to Ronny Gil and a double by Oscar Tavares. On the double, the throw home from the outfield sailed over the head of Sergio Burruel but Simpson was backing up the play. Quad Cities had two runners at third base but the wild throw to third by Simpson wasn't handled by Rohan as Gil scored for a 2-1 Bandits lead.

Quad Cities doubled their lead in the fourth as Rodriguez sent a solo homer off the batters' eye in straightaway center field. The homer, his sixth of the season, put the Chiefs in a 3-1 hole. Peoria left two runners on against Russell in the fifth and with two on and two out in the sixth, Ryan Copeland came out of the pen to keep the Chiefs from scoring.

The Bandits put the game away in the seventh without even needing a basehit. Su-Min Jung walked the number nine hitter Joe Bergman and then threw a wild pitch to move him to second. Another walk put two on and a second wild pitch moved Bergman to third. Gil took advantage with a sacrifice fly for a 4-1 Bandits lead.

Simpson (1-4) allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits over 4 2/3 innings of work. Simpson walked three, struck out two and allowed a homer. Jung did not allow a hit but gave up a run on two walks, one hit batter and three wild pitches over 3 1/3 innings of work.
