Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Portland, Maine- The Portland Sea Dogs (13-29) received an outstanding pitching performance from Alex Wilson but fell short, losing 2-1 to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (29-16) Wednesday night at Hadlock Field.
The Sea Dogs took an early 1-0 lead in the first. Lead -off batter Jeremy Hazelbaker legged out an infield single, stole second base and advanced to third on Ryan Lavarnway's ground out. Tim Federowicz collected his 24th RBI of the season beating out an infield single to third base to score Hazelbaker. Hazelbaker continues to perform well at the Double-A level, collecting two hits, the only Sea Dog to do so, and reaching base three times on the night. He has hit safely in four of five games since his call-up, hitting at a .389 clip.
Meanwhile, Portland starter Alex Wilson was cruising holding the Fisher Cats scoreless on two hits into the fifth inning when a costly two out throwing error by shortstop Jon Hee led to an unearned run. Hee's errant throw to first allowed Sobolewski to reach second and score on a two out single by Darin Mastroianni to tie the game at one. Wilson had retired ten straight batters until the miscue.
Wilson would not factor into the decision despite tossing six outstanding innings holding the visitors to three hits and not allowing an earned run. He struck out six and walked two.
Cesar Cabral relieved Wilson in the seventh and surrendered three hits leading to the game winning run. Sobolewski's RBI single to right field scoring Mike McDade lifted New Hampshire to the 2-1 victory. Cabral falls to 0-2 tossing 1.2 innings allowing one run on three hits.
New Hampshire starter Henderson Alvarez earned the win improving to 2-0 tossing six innings holding the Portland offense to one run on six hits. The Fisher Cats bullpen tossed three innings of no-hit ball to preserve the victory with Yohan Pino, Bobby Korecky, and Alan Farina each tossing an inning. Farina earned his sixth save pitching the final frame.
Moises Sierra collected a game high three hits for New Hampshire in the win.
The two clubs conclude the series Thursday night at 6:00 PM at Hadlock Field. Portland has not yet announced a starter. Right-handed pitcher B.J LaMura (2-3, 3.38) will be on the mound for the Fisher Cats. The first 1,000 fans to enter the ballpark on Thursday will receive a Kevin Youkilis bobblehead doll, courtesy of Irving Oil.
