Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa. - On what was an ideal day to play morning baseball, the Altoona Curve belted out 14 hits and seven runs to top the Bowie Baysox by the score of 7-1 on Wednesday at Blair County Ballpark. In the game, the Curve also received another fine pitching performance from their starter Mike Colla.
For the third straight game, the Baysox scored in the first inning as Xavier Avery led the ballgame off with a double and was brought home on a sacrifice fly by Roibbie Widlansky. That run, however, would be the only run the Baysox would score the entire game.
The Curve went scoreless in the first, but piled on the runs in the second and third innings off starter Wynn Pelzer. In the second, the Curve had two on with two down as Brad Chalk singled off his former teammate in the San Diego Padres organization, Pelzer, to tie the game at one. The next batter, Brock Holt, then tripled in Chalk and Kris Watts, clearing the bases and making it three runs in the inning.
The Curve matched their run output from the second with three more in the third as they chased Pelzer from the game. Quincy Latimore led the inning off with a single and his hit was followed by four more in the inning. Jordy Mercer singled next, followed by a run-scoring single from Jeremy Farrell to make it 4-1. Eric Fryer then got in on the party with an RBI-single, one of his three hits on the day, to make it 5-1. Finally, Chalk grabbed his second RBI-single of the game, which sent Pelzer to the dugout and completed a second straight three-run inning for the Curve.
Pelzer (1-5) took the loss as he lasted 2.2 innings and allowed ten hits and six earned runs. The Curve added a seventh run in the seventh inning after Starling Marte doubled to lead off the inning, Mercer brought him home on a sacrifice fly to right.
Colla (3-1) settled down after allowing a run in the first inning and pitched four more scoreless innings to earn his third win of the season. Colla allowed five hits with one walk and four strikeouts. In relief of Colla, Tim Alderson pitched a scoreless inning, and Bryan Morris finished the game with three more scoreless innings, allowing one hit, one walk and three strikeouts. Since Morris worked the final three innings in the win, he earns his first career save.
Fryer led the Curve with three hits as the team had 12 singles, one double and a triple in the game. Holt, Marte, Farrell and Chalk all had two hits in the game, and with the win, the Curve are back above .500. The Curve had lost the first two games of the series against the Baysox.
The Curve (23-22) and Baysox (23-23) will match up for their series finale and the finale of an eight-game homestand on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. For the Curve, they'll send RHP Aaron Pribanic (4-1, 2.11) to the hill and he will be opposed by RHP Steve Johnson (2-1, 2.06). The Curve will be looking for a series split with Bowie, and if they can earn a series split, they would also have an above-.500 homestand.
Thursday's game is another School Kids Day and with it comes a special start time of 10:30 a.m. It will also be a Thirsty Thursday with 16 oz. Miller Lite drafts for $2.00 and regular sodas for $1.50 thanks to Rocky 104.9.
Game time is set for 10:30 a.m. with gates to Blair County Ballpark opening at 9:30 a.m. Great seats for the ballgame are still available by calling the Curve at 877.99.CURVE or by visiting the official website of the Curve www.AltoonaCurve.com. Pregame coverage on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network will begin at 10:00 a.m.
