Altoona, Pa. - The Altoona Curve scored six runs between the second and third innings to take a big lead and hand the Baysox their first loss of the series 7-1. The loss drops the Baysox to 23-23 and out of a first place tie with Harrisburg in the Western Division.

For the third game in a row the Baysox got off to a fast start, scoring in the first inning. Center fielder Xavier Avery extended his hitting streak to eight games with a lead off double to center field and moved to third on a ground out by third baseman Buck Britton. Avery scored on a sacrifice fly by designated hitter Robbie Widlansky to put the Baysox up 1-0. Widlansky drove across the winning run in Tuesday's game with a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth inning.

The Curve took the lead back in the bottom of the second inning against right-handed pitcher Wynn Pelzer. Jeremy Farrell hit a lead off single to third base and moved to second on a bunt single down the third base line by Eric Fryer. Kris Watts grounded into a force out to eliminate Farrell at third base while the runners arrived safely at first and second. After Pelzer got Miles Durham to pop out to first base, Brad Chalk plated Fryer with a single to right field that moved Watts to third. The bases were cleared when Brock Holt tripled to right field to put the Curve up 3-1.

Altoona scored three more runs in the bottom of the third inning as Pelzer struggled to record outs. Quincy Latimore hit a lead off single to right field and moved to second on a single to left field by Jordy Mercer. Farrell recorded the first RBI of the inning with a single to center field that plated Latimore and moved Mercer to second. Fryer then hit the fourth consecutive single of the inning to center field to score Mercer and move Farrell to second. Watts grounded out, but advanced the runners to second and third before Durham grounded out to third base for the second out. Chalk drove in the third run of the inning and his third of the game with an infield single to first base that pushed Farrell across. Right-handed reliever Tim Bascom then replaced Pelzer to record the last out of the inning, but not before the Curve had taken a 6-1 lead.

The Curve added another run in the bottom of the seventh inning against Bascom. Starling Marte hit a lead off double to center field and moved to third on a ground out to third base by Latimore. Marte then scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Mercer to give the Curve a 7-1 lead.

Pelzer lasted just two and two-thirds innings and allowed six earned runs on 10 hits while striking out one batter. Bascom pitched four and one-thirds innings in relief of Pelzer and allowed just one earned run and one hit while striking out two. Right-handed reliever Raul Rivero pitched the bottom of the eighth inning and though he allowed the bases to be loaded, he did not allow any runs and struck out two batters.

With his RBI in the top of the first inning, Widlansky has now collected a team-leading 28 RBIs this season. Widlansky has been effective at the plate during this series, driving in at least one run in the first three games. Despite the RBI, Widlansky's team-leading eight-game hitting streak came to an end Wednesday as he went 0-for-3.

The Baysox offense has struggled to string hits together all season, though they had shown improvement in the first two games against Altoona. In Wednesday's game, the Baysox recorded seven hits, but never more than two in an inning as they scored just one run. Altoona recorded 14 hits in the game and converted them into seven runs.

Left fielder LJ Hoes has been with the Baysox for just three games, but has already made an impact on offense. Through three games, Hoes is 6-for-12 and has recorded two doubles and an RBI.

Thursday, RHP Steve Johnson (2-1, 2.06) will take the mound for the Baysox as they take on the Curve in a game starting at 10:30 a.m. His opponent will be RHP Aaron Pribanic (4-1, 2.11).

The Baysox began an eight-game road trip starting Monday, May 23, but return home for a six game homestand Tuesday, May 31. For more information on Baysox promotions and theme nights, visit www.baysox.com.
