Hommer Happy Squirrels Beat Erie

The SeaWolves dropped their second straight game to the Richmond Flying Squirrels, 6-3, at The Diamond on Wednesday night. The loss drops the SeaWolves back to three-games under .500.

Richmond struck first in the bottom of the second against Erie starter Luke Putkonen. Roger Kieschnick led off with a single and Johnny Monell connected on an opposite-field home run to left-center for a 2-0 Richmond lead.

In the fifth, the Flying Squirrels would go ahead by five. Skyler Stromsmoe led off, singled and moved to second on an error. A Charlie Culberson single put runners on the corners for Nick Noonan. Noonan grounded out to Rawley Bishop at first, Stromsmoe came home to score for a 3-0 lead. Juan Perez followed with an opposite field home run putting the Squirrels up 5-0.

Erie cut into the Richmond lead in the eighth against reliever Dan Quinowski. Shawn Roof and Jamie Johnson connected on back-to-back bunt singles putting two on. With one out, Bishop laced a single to the gap in left center and on an error by Perez in center, Roof and Johnson scored to make it 5-2. Bishop would end up on third on the error and came home to score on a Bryan Pounds sacrifice fly making it 5-3 Squirrels.

Richmond added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth off of reliever Chance Ruffin when Monell slammed a two-out solo home run putting Richmond up 6-3.

The SeaWolves got two baserunners on in the ninth against Jason Stoffel but failed to score as Stoffel earned his eighth save.

Putkonen (0-6) took the loss for Erie allowing five runs on seven hits with a pair of walks and one strikeout in five innings. He has dropped three straight starts and six of his last seven.

The SeaWolves and Flying Squirrels meet in the final game of the four game series on Thursday night at The Diamond.7:05 First Pitch. Lefty Jay Voss (First Start) takes the mound for Erie against RHP Daryl Maday (1-3, 4.14 ERA).
