Reading Fightin Phils News Release

(Reading, PA) -- Derrick Mitchell launched a two-run home run in the bottom of the second inning, he also started a rally with a leadoff single in the bottom of the tenth inning, but Reading fell short to Trenton on Wednesday by a score of 4-3 in game two of their three-game series from FirstEnergy Stadium.

Trenton reliever Wilkins Arias (1-0, 1.35) tossed a perfect ninth inning to record the victory, while reliever Fernando Hernandez got the save in the tenth. The Reading Phillies were 2-0 in extra innings entering play on Wednesday evening, but were unable to get past Trenton after ten frames, despite a solid day at the plate from Mitchell, who finished 2-4 with a home run and two RBIs.

With the game tied 2-2, Reading took the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning courtesy of a Michael Spidale RBI single. Spidale finished the game with two hits and is now batting .303 on the season.

Now, with the R-Phils ahead by a score of 3-2, and a chance to get their first win of the series, the club looked to reliever Justin De Fratus in the top of the ninth inning. De Fratus, who got the Thunder out in order in the eighth, allowed a game-tying solo home run to left fielder Damon Sublett to make it a 3-3 game. The home run for Sublett was his first of the season.

Reading reliever Phillippe Aumont began the top of the tenth inning with the game tied 3-3. Aumont (0-3, 3.27), allowed a leadoff single to shortstop Jose Pirela. Two batters later, with Pirela now on second base, first baseman Jose Gil singled past third baseman Carlos Rivero. The speedy Pirela came around to score before the throw home from Rivero - giving the Thunder their first lead of the game and ultimately the victory.

Trenton starter Dellin Betances was very effective for the Thunder, but did not factor in the decision. Betances, a native of Brooklyn, NY, struck-out 10 batters over six innings and allowed just two runs on four hits.

Reading starter Ryan Edell tossed six solid innings, but also did not factor in the decision. The Boston, MA native struck-out six batters and allowed just two runs on six hits. The loss for Reading was their second-straight to Trenton and fourth in five games this season.

Taking the ball for Reading in game three on Thursday will be RHP B.J. Rosenberg (0-0, 1.90). Rosenberg, a Virginia native, will make just his second career start on Thursday. In his first start, Rosenberg allowed just one run over four innings, but did not factor in the decision.

On the hill for Trenton for the finale will be RHP Craig Heyer (3-2, 3.03). Heyer, a native of Arizona, has gone 2-0 with a 4.80 ERA during the month of May. On Thursday he'll vie for his third win over his last four starts.
