Portland Drops Season-High Fifth Straight

May 14, 2011 - Eastern League (EL1)
Portland Sea Dogs News Release

New Britain, Connecticut- The Portland Sea Dogs had numerous chances, but were swept in a doubleheader against the New Britain Rock Cats Saturday night. The losses extend the Sea Dogs losing streak to five, the worst run of the season for Portland. New Britain took the first game 6-3 and the second by a 4-0 score. With a win tomorrow, the Rock Cats would sweep the Sea Dogs in a five-game series, the first time that will have happened since the 2007 season. That was from August 31-September 3 in New Britain.

Yangervis Solarte led the way in both games for the Rock Cats. The infielder went 3-for-5 combined in the two games, scoring two runs and driving in another. Solarte entered the day second in the Eastern League in hitting behind only Portland's Alex Hassan. Solarte singled with two outs in the third inning to give New Britain a 2-1 lead in the first game. He also scored the opening runs of both games, on a single by Deibinson Romero in game one and on a sacrifice fly by Mark Dolenc in game two.

Hassan chipped in with a solid day for the Sea Dogs. The Milton, MA native went 2-for-4 on the day with a solo home run, his second round-tripper of the year, in game one. In the second game, Hassan reached on his only registered at-bat with a double. He was hit once in each game, and added another free pass in game two.

Deolis Guerra (3-4) beat Stolmy Pimentel (0-5) in the first game. After allowing ten runs to Portland last Saturday, Guerra redeemed himself with a strong, five-inning performance in the first half of the doubleheader. After the early home run by Hassan in the first inning, Guerra settled down and allowed only one other hit the rest of his time on the mound. That allowed New Britain's offense to rally for a 6-1 lead before Will Middlebrooks scored two for the Sea Dogs with a bases-loaded single.

If the pitching was solid for the Rock Cats in game one, it was outstanding in game two. Brett Jacobson worked around four walks and a hit batsman, but didn't allow a hit or a run over three innings of work, getting his second start of the year. Ryan Mullins (1-0) came in and surrendered just two hits, but no runs in his three innings of work to earn the win. Hassan, Oscar Tejeda, and Vladimir Frias recorded the only hits for Portland. Miguel Gonzalez (0-1) was tagged with the loss in his first appearance and first start, after being called up from Advanced-A Salem.

The Sea Dogs wrap up their five-game series with the Rock Cats tomorrow afternoon. After an off day Monday, the team comes back to Hadlock Field Tuesday for a three-game series with the Reading Phillies. That night will be the 4th annual "All the Hair You Can Spare" event, allowing fans to donate their hair. Wednesday night will be Teacher Appreciation Night at the ballpark.
