Rock Cats complete doubleheader sweep

(Game 1) NEW BRITAIN, CT - Deolis Guerra turned in his finest performance since his first start of the season as the Rock Cats downed Portland, 6-3 in the opening game of Saturday night's doubleheader before a crowd of 6,070.

Alex Hassan put Portland on the board with a one out solo homer over the left field wall off of Guerra in the first inning.

The Rock Cats tied the game in the bottom of the second. Yangervis Solarte doubled with one out and Deibinson Romero legged out an infield single to put runners on the corners. Mark Dolenc then knocked in Solarte with a two out single to right field.

In the next inning, the ‘Cats struck again. With two outs, Chris Parmelee was hit by a pitch and Evan Bigley worked a walk. Solarte then drilled a single into right to score Parmelee and put the Rock Cats on top, 2-1.

The ‘Cats tacked on four more runs in the fifth, beginning with back-to-back RBI doubles by Parmelee and Bigley. Daniel Rohlfing added a two-run double for the 6-1 lead.

Guerra (3-4) limited the Sea Dogs to one run on two hits in five innings. He struck out three.

The Sea Dogs made things interesting in the top of the sixth of a seven-inning game. Tyler Robertson took the ball for the ‘Cats and retired the first two batter she faced. He then hits Hassan with a pitch and served up a single to Ryan Lavarnway before walking Tim Federowicz to load the bases. Will Middlebrooks then lined a single into left to knock in two runs and cut the lead in half. Robertson walked one more batter before striking out Oscar Tejeda to escape the jam. He struck out the side in the seventh to close out the game.

Stolmy Pimentel (0-5) allowed five runs on eight hits through 4 1/3 innings to suffer the loss for the Sea Dogs.

ALLSTATE PLAYER OF THE GAME: Deolis Guerra struck out three and walked none in five innings. He allowed one run and two hits.

(Game 2) NEW BRITAIN, CT - Chris Herrmann homered in a 4-0 shutout over Portland as the Rock Cats took the nightcap to complete a doubleheader sweep over Portland Saturday night. The Rock Cats are now tied for first place in their division.

The Rock Cats scored its first run in the second inning when Yangervis Solarte singled and moved to third on Deibinson Romero's double. Mark Dolenc's sacrifice fly to right plated Solarte for the 1-0 advantage.

Herrmann hit a two-run shot off the Ford sign in center field that put the Rock Cats ahead, 3-0. In the fourth, Steve Singleton added an RBI double.

Brett Jacobson walked four but didn't allow a hit in three shutout innings as he made the spot start for the Rock Cats in the nightcap.

Ryan Mullins came on in relief for the Rock Cats in his first appearance since 2009. Mullins (1-0), who recently joined the Rock Cats, is rehabbing from an injury and working on his return to Triple-A. He fired three shutout innings in relief, limiting the Sea Dogs to two hits to pick up the win.

Portland starter Miguel Gonzalez (0-1) allowed four runs on seven hits in four innings in his Double-A debut.
