Rock Cats' Lanigan Shuts Down Sea Dogs

New Britain, Connecticut- The script was different, but the result was the same. For the second straight night, the New Britain Rock Cats escaped with a close victory over the Portland Sea Dogs. After winning a one-run, back-and-forth slugfest last night, the Rock Cats utilized a terrific start from Bobby Lanigan (4-2) to gain a 2-0 win Friday night. The New Britain righty went eight innings, giving up only three hits in the shutout.
Alex Wilson (4-2) threw almost as well for the Sea Dogs. In his second straight start against the Rock Cats and Lanigan, Wilson tossed six innings and allowed just two hits. Unfortunately for him, both turned into runs. However, he struck out a season-high seven batters and didn't walk anybody. Wilson's second quality start of the season wasn't quite good enough as he was hit with his second loss.
Steve Singleton made the difference for New Britain in his first game back from Triple-A Rochester. The shortstop doubled off Wilson in the fourth, scoring on a groundout by Joe Benson. Singleton made it 2-0 by tagging a two-out home run in the sixth inning. He also played well defensively, starting a double play to help quell a potential rally in the ninth inning. Che-Hsuan Lin led off with a single off Jake Stevens. Then, Alex Hassan grounded towards the middle where Singleton scooped it up to start the twin killing.
Despite the fact that Portland starters have racked up quality starts in four of the last five games, the Sea Dogs are just 1-4 on the current road trip, with all of the losses coming by three runs or less. For the season, 17 of the team's 21 losses are by three runs or less. The overall record in those games is 4-17. Of those 17 setbacks, seven are by only one run.
The Sea Dogs continue their five-game series with the Rock Cats tomorrow with the first doubleheader of the year for Portland. New Britain played a twin bill with the Harrisburg Senators earlier this season. The team returns to Hadlock Field Tuesday for a three-game series with the Reading Phillies. That night will be the 4th annual "All the Hair You Can Spare" event, allowing fans to donate their hair. Wednesday night will be Teacher Appreciation Night at the ballpark.
