Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Portland, Maine- The Portland Sea Dogs (5-8) battled for nine innings bringing the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning after being down by five runs. Yet, in the end it was the New Britain Rock Cats (8-6) who provided the fireworks as they defeated the Sea Dogs 9-4 Friday night at Hadlock Field before a crowd of 6,026.
Yangervis Solarte led the New Britain offensive attack with a 3-for-5 performance, collecting a pair of RBI. Former Sea Dog Ray Chang also helped the Rock Cat cause with a 2-for-5 night and three RBI, he now has a team high 16 RBI for the season and ranks second in the Eastern League.
New Britain got the scoring started early; Chris Parmlee doubled off the center-field wall to start the second inning, and scored on Solarte's run-scoring single to left as New Britain jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead.
Portland tied the game at one in the third inning off New Britain starter Steve Hirschfeld. With one out, Che-Hsuan Lin lined a single to center field, and scored on Tim Federowicz's double, which struck the center-field wall.
The Rock Cats snapped the 1-1 tie in the fourth inning, plating three runs against Portland starter Stolmy Pimentel. The righty walked the first two batters of the inning whom would later score on Chang's single and Solarte's double. Mark Dolenc added a sac-fly to give the visitors a 4-1 lead.
Portland fought back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to pull within a run of New Britain 4-3. Jorge Padron led-off the inning with a ground rule double. After a Will Middlebrooks single, Padron scored on a wild pitch by Hirschfeld. Middlebrooks would cross the plate on a Ryan Dent sacrifice fly.
New Britain added two runs in the fifth inning taking a 6-3 lead, chasing Pimentel (0-2) from the game. Pimentel lasted 4.1 innings yielding six runs on six hits taking the loss.
Chih-Hsien Chiang delivered a bases loaded single up the middle in the fifth to bring the Sea Dogs within two runs at 6-4.
Jeremy Kehrt relieved Pimentel, but did not fare much better surrendering three runs on six hits in 2.2 innings of work as New Britain extended their lead to 9-4. The big blow was a two run double by Joe Benson scoring Daniel Rohlfing and Michael Holliman in the sixth inning.
The Sea Dogs offense would continue to battle making the game interesting in the ninth inning. Ryan Lavarnway blasted his second home run of the season, a two run shot into the Sea Dogs bullpen. After a Middlebrooks single, Oscar Tejeda ripped a double scoring Middlebrooks. The Sea Dogs would bring the tying run to the plate but New Britain would bring on their closer, Tyler Robertson, who would strike out Chiang to end the game. Robertson picks-up his third save of the season.
Santos Arias earns the win for New Britain tossing 2.1 innings of relief holding the Sea Dogs to one hit.
