TONIGHT: The Richmond Flying Squirrels and Altoona Curve will meet in game two of a three-game series...The Flying Squirrels rallied for four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as Richmond overcame a 3-0 deficit to knock off the Curve 7-3 in the series opener in front of 8,019 on Thursday night at The Diamond.
TONIGHT'S STARTERS: Left-hander Clayton Tanner gets the start in game two of the series for the Flying Squirrels...Enters the season rates as the #30 prospect in the Giants farm system according to Baseball America...Suffered the loss in his last start 4/17 at Altoona...Allowed five runs, three earned, on six hits in four innings plus three batters...Struck out three batters and walked three...Three of the six hits he allowed came with two strikes in the count...Allowed the leadoff man to reach in three times (scored all three times)...Recorded six grounds and two fly outs...Threw 77 pitches, 48 strikes...Threw 18 pitches or more in three of his five innings (3rd-5th)...Threw first-pitch strikes to 14 of the 21 batters he faced....Is 0-5 with a 4.23 ERA in eight career starts against Altoona, allowing 30 runs, 18 earned, on 48 hits in 38 1/3 innings while striking out 22 and walking 23...Has failed to go five innings in four of his eight starts against the Curve...Spent the entire 2010 season with Richmond and went 9-9 with a 3.68 ERA in 27 starts...Struck out 79 batters and walked 64 in 149 innings...Named an Eastern League Mid-Season All-Star, but did not pitch in the game...Finished the season ninth in the EL in ERA...Only Flying Squirrel that is a member of the San Francisco Giants 40-man roster...Selected in the 3rd round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft.
Right-hander Jared Hughes gets the nod in game two of the series for the Curve...Suffered the loss in his last start 4/15 against Richmond...Allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits in five innings...Struck out one batter and walked none...Allowed two runs and three hits while throwing 43 pitches in his first two innings...Threw 35 pitches over his final three innings...Is 4-2 with a 2.98 ERA in eight games, six starts, against the Flying Squirrels in his career and has allowed 19 runs, 15 earned, on 47 hits in 45 1/3 innings, striking out 33 batters and walking eight...Spent the entire 2010 season with Altoona and went 12-8 with a 4.42 ERA in 30 games, including 23 starts...Finished tied for second in the Eastern League in wins (12), ranked sixth in hits allowed (166) and was seventh in strikeouts (120) and innings pitched (150 2/3)...Moved to the bullpen 7/25, making seven total relief appearances going 3-0 with a 2.96 ERA as a reliever...Was 9-8 with a 4.70 ERA in his 23 starts...Left-handed batters hit .311 (102-for-328) against him while right-handed batters hit .242 (64-for-264)...Appeared in 17 games including seven starts with Altoona in 2009, bouncing back from an early season injury...Went 1-6 with a 3.88 ERA with 36 strike outs and 16 walks in 46 1/3 innings of work...Was 0-2 with a 7.00 ERA in 10 relief appearances...Was 1-4 with a 1.91 ERA in his seven starts...Counting 2011, has spent parts of the last four seasons with Altoona including making six starts in his first stint with the Curve in 2008...Selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the fourth round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft...Attended Cal State Long Beach.
COMING FULL CIRCLE: The Flying Squirrels batted around in the bottom of the sixth inning last night, sending 10 men to the plate in the four-run frame...It was the season-high for most batters in an inning, eclipsing the previous mark of seven...Richmond sent 11 batters up in an inning twice last season.
ON THE RUN: The Flying Squirrels matched their season-high for runs scored with the seven last night...The club also scored seven runs 4/12/11 against Bowie...Richmond scored 12 runs total on its recently completed six-game road trip...Overall, the Flying Squirrels have scored 44 runs, third-fewest in the Eastern League...Last season, Richmond ranked last in the league with 547 total runs scored.
WALK AWAY: The Flying Squirrels drew five walks in last night's game, the most in a single game this season...The club's previous season-high for single-game walks was four which occurred on 4/7/11 and 4/9/11, both against New Britain...Even with the five walks last night, Richmond is last in the Eastern League with just 23 walks drawn as a team.
SWEET AND LOW: Catcher Aaron Lowenstein threw out three base runners attempting to steal last night...It matched a career-high for the 25-year-old who also threw out three base runners 7/7/08 while he was a member of the AZL Giants against the AZL Cubs...In his first two professional seasons, the product of UC Irvine threw out 35.5% (33-of-93) of would-be base stealers...Lowenstein is tied with New Hampshire's Travis d'Arnaud for second in the Eastern League for most base runners thrown out (5)...Flying Squirrels catchers have thrown out 9-of-21 attempted base stealers and their .429 percentage is tied with New Hampshire for the league lead.
NOOOOONAN: Infielder Nick Noonan, who was added to the Flying Squirrels roster yesterday from Extended Spring Training, got the start at short stop last night for Richmond...It was the first time the 21-year-old appeared at short since 8/24/07 while with the AZL Giants...The former supplemental first-round draft pick played 21 games at short stop in 2007 during his pro debut...He played exclusively at second base over the previous three seasons including 99 games at second with the Flying Squirrels in 2010.
