Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - The Greenville Drive (5-1) pummeled the Charleston RiverDogs (2-4) 15-0 behind another offensive outburst. The Drive scored seven runs in the second inning to put an end to the game before it really even got started.
The offense wasn't to be outdone by the starting pitcher yet again. Manuel Rivera (2-0) threw 86 pitches over 5.0 innings, allowing five hits and zero runs. The left-hander struck out eight RiverDogs and only walked two while cruising through his second straight quality start.
After going down 1, 2, 3 in the bottom of the first, Greenville then batted through the order in the bottom of the second, sending 10 batters to the plate. Bryce Brentz hit a two-run homer to cap the seven run frame that saw the first four batters reach base and score.
The Drive scored the remainder of the runs with four runs apiece in the sixth and eighth innings with some more help from a bad RiverDogs defense, and a shaky bullpen.
In the bottom of the sixth, Sean Coyle reached on a walk, then Felix Sanchez got to first on an error from Charleston second baseman Anderson Feliz. Both Coyle and Sanchez were brought home by a Lucas LeBlanc triple to right center, giving the Drive seven three-baggers through the first six games.
Two innings later, the Drive batted around for the second time in the game, pushing across four more runs while only tallying two hits. Charleston reliever Freddy Lewis issued a pair of free passes with the bases loaded before Jose Garcia added an RBI-single. Christian Vazquez scored the game's final run on a wild pitch.
The duo of Juan Rodriguez and Jordan Flasher combined for 4.0 scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Rodriguez allowed a pair of hits and struckout five before giving way to Flasher. The right-hander didn't allow a hit in 2.0 innings but walked and struckout three.
The Drive and RiverDogs continue their four-game series tomorrow evening with first pitch set for 7:05 PM from Fluor Field. Right-hander Kyle Stroup (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will toe the slab for Greenville, while Charleston counters with lefty Nik Turley (0-1, 14.73 ERA).
Tomorrow is also the first "Spinx Wednesday" promotion of the season. Fans who "Like" Spinx on Facebook have the chance to throw out a first pitch during the season.
