Goldie Leads Aces in 4-3 Comeback Win Over Utah

February 16, 2011 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release

Wes Goldie scored two late goals in less than two and a half minutes to lead the Alaska Aces to a 4-3 come from behind win over the Utah Grizzlies from the Maverik Center on Tuesday night. The Aces have won two straight on the road, and four of their last five overall, and improved to 28-19-3 on the year. Alaska moved within three points of the Grizzlies, with two games in hand, for the top spot in the Mountain Division. The Aces continue their road trip with a rematch in Utah on Wednesday night. The Aces grabbed the only goal of the first period when Kory Falite was left untouched at the top of the crease, took a pass, and buried a shot at 9:36 to make it 1-0 Aces. That score held throughout the frame and the Aces outshot the Grizzlies 7-5.

The second period jumped out to a wild start. The Grizzlies got on the board in the opening minute when Marcus Carroll went the length of the ice on an odd-man rush while shorthanded and scored 59 seconds into the period. The Aces answered on the same power play when Bryan Miller scored from the bottom of the left circle at 2:05 to reclaim a 2-1 lead. Utah evened the score at 10:37 when Simon Ferguson's shot bounced of the arm and then back of Aces goaltender Adam Courchaine and into the net behind him. However, the net was knocked off its pegs almost at the same time. After a conference among the officials, it was ruled a goal and the score was tied 2-2.

The Grizzlies scored the first goal of the third at 5:53 when Brock Wilson tallied from the bottom of the left circle to give Utah their first lead of the night. The Aces thought they had tied the game on a goal from Bryan Miller midway through the period, but the goal was disallowed when Scott Burt was ruled to have impeded the play of Utah goaltender, Andrew Engelage in the crease. Minutes later, however, Kane Lafranchise sprung Goldie on a breakaway and Goldie walked in, and scored his first of the two big goals at 12:48. Then at 15:11 Goldie poked home his own rebound behind Engelage to give the Aces a 4-3 lead late in the game. Courchaine and the Aces kept the Grizzlies at bay down the stretch, limiting Utah to just a single shot in the final five minutes and preserving the win. Goldie's goals were his 28th and 29th, moving him into first place in the ECHL this season.

Adam Courchaine (8-6-1) made 26 saves on 29 shots, earning the win. Andrew Engelage (18-9-4) suffered the loss, making 26 saves on 30 shots. The Aces power play went 1-7, while the Grizzlies went 0-4. The Aces outshot the Grizzlies 3-29 in the game.

The Aces continue their four-game road trip with a rematch in Utah on Wednesday night. They will return on Thursday, Feb. 24th, 25th and 27th to host the Las Vegas Thunder. Tickets are on sale now.
