Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Bakersfield, CA - In a Tuesday night match-up at the Rabobank Arena, the Victoria Salmon Kings went for their third straight road victory as they took on the Bakersfield Condors. Victoria entered the game as winners of five of their last six games, while Bakersfield came in ranked third in the Pacific Division. The Salmon Kings gave reigning ECHL Goaltender of the Week David Shantz the start, while the Condors gave former Phoenix Coyote Josh Tordjman the call in net.
The Salmon Kings came out strong and got on the board 43 seconds into the game. Rick Cleaver drove to the net from the left side and put a shot on net. Tordjman made the first save, but Rob Hennigar was on the doorstep to put the puck through the legs of the Bakersfield goaltender. The goal was Hennigar's sixth of the season. The teams exchanged end-to-end opportunities as they looked to take control of the game. The Salmon Kings looked to double their lead after Kiel McLeod had the puck in the high slot. The former Kelowna Rocket took a quick snap-shot, but Tordjman got his shoulder of the puck and directed it out of play. Minutes after his first opportunity, McLeod looked for the net again. The Salmon Kings' forward received a quick pass in the hash-marks and one-timed the puck off the left post and to the right half-boards. Victoria had a quick 5-on-3 power play after Joel Broda took a tripping penalty at 15:55. The Salmon Kings controlled the puck off the face-off, but could not get any shots on net off the short 18 second two-man advantage. Seconds after the first Condor stepped out of the box, Chad Painchaud found a loose puck in front of the net after a point shot from the right side. The Salmon Kings' leading scorer from last season sidestepped to the left and put the puck in the empty net. The marker was scored at 16:40 and was Painchaud's 15th of the campaign. Victoria held all the momentum after the first period, as they took their 2-0 lead into the second frame after they outshot Bakersfield 13-5.
Victoria started where they left off at the end of the first as the visiting team had a good, hard shift in the Bakersfield zone which drew an early penalty. The Salmon Kings continued to hem the Condors in their own zone after they cycled the puck for a couple minutes. Victoria got their second power play goal at 6:10. McLeod finally got on the scoresheet after he found a loose rebound at the top of the crease and slid the puck past the Bakersfield goalie for his seventh goal. Bakersfield looked to swing the momentum after Bobby Robbins rocked Salmon Kings' defenseman Jeff Caister behind the Victoria net. The Condors had back-to-back power play opportunities, but the Salmon Kings' penalty killers kept them to the outside and successfully killed the penalties. At 14:15 Matt Siddall and Guillaume Lefebvre dropped the gloves, as the Bakersfield looked for a spark. The combatants wrestled around for a bit and then fell to the ice. The bout was called a draw. Just 35 seconds, while on the power play, Rob Hennigar fed a seeing-eye pass from the right half-boards to Ryan MacMurchy at the top of the left faceoff circle. The Salmon Kings' forward one-timed the puck into the net, before Tordjman could slide over and make the save for his 15th goal of the year. 27 seconds after the Salmon Kings' third power play goal of the evening, Derek Couture extended the Victoria lead to 4-0. Ryan Dingle burst down the left side and threw a cross-crease pass to Couture who snapped the puck short side on the Condors' netminder for his sixth marker. Brian Stewart replaced Tordjman in the Bakersfield net after the fifth Victoria goal. Three second period goals pushed the Salmon Kings lead to 5-0 as they went into the final period.
The third period started as Bakersfield looked to get back into the game. Jay Cascalenda went in on a partial breakaway and shot high blocker side on Shantz for the Condors first of the night at 3:17 for his second on the year. Bakersfield continued their pressure and were rewarded with another marker on the power play at 8:02. After a goalmouth scramble Robins found a loose puck and deposited it into the net for his eighth. Following the back-to-back goals the Salmon Kings pressured the Condors back into their own zone. At 16:22 McLeod skated into the zone off the right zone and faked a move that froze the goaltender, deked around him and then tucked the puck in the empty net for a highlight reel goal. The Condors were unable to pull any closer the remainder of the period as the Salmon Kings took momentum back and controlled the play. Just over one minute from the final whistle, Dingle finished the scoring for the night with his fifth of the season. Salmon Kings 7 Condors 2.
Victoria went 4/6 66.6% on the power play, while Bakersfield was 1/5 20.0%. The Salmon Kings outshot the Condors 31-25.
