Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The TinCaps couldn't hold on to a pair of leads in a 5-4 loss to the West Michigan Whitecaps, Sunday at Parkview Field. Nate Freiman smacked a two-run double.
The TinCaps went just 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position. They have lost nine of their last 13 games.
In the bottom of the first, Freiman scorched a double to right-center field, chasing Jeudy Valdez and Jason Hagerty home to give the TinCaps a 2-0 lead.
West Michigan scored a run in the fourth on a Clay Jones single and tied it in the fifth when Corey Jones singled home a run.
Fort Wayne recovered the lead in the fifth. With two on and two outs, Valdez lifted a fly ball to right field which fell for an error. Both runners scored to make it 4-2, Fort Wayne.
The Whitecaps continued their steady progress, scoring single runs in the sixth and seventh to tie it at 4-4. In the eighth, Michael Rockett reached on an infield single and later scored on Tony Plagman's sacrifice fly, giving West Michigan its first lead of the game at 5-4.
Valdez ripped a leadoff double in the eighth, but never moved from second base as the TinCaps didn't score for the rest of the night.
Fort Wayne LHP Josh Spence (2-2) took the loss. West Michigan RHP Zach Samuels (2-2) was the winning pitcher after a perfect inning of work. LHP Kenny Faulk picked up his 12th save.
