South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

Dayton, OH - After finally tying the game in the top of the eighth inning, the South Bend Silver Hawks gave back two runs in the bottom of the frame in falling to the Dayton Dragons 6-4 on Sunday afternoon. South Bend's road struggles continue as they drop to 23-45 away from the Cove with one game remaining tomorrow afternoon.

South Bend starter Scottie Allen (ND) had just one bad inning in his final start of the season. Allen allowed four runs on five hits in the second inning, with the Dayton charge being led by a Mark Fleury home run and a two run double by Tommy Nurre.

Allen turned in 5.0 innings, allowing just one other hit outside of the second, while striking out six and walking no one. He'll finish the year at 4-4 with a 4.73 ERA.

The Silver Hawks slowly chipped away, scoring two runs in the top of the fourth, one in the sixth, and one more in the eighth inning to finally tie the game. Andrew Fie had a RBI fielder's choice in the fourth, with a second run scoring on a wild pitch. Chris Jarrett walked with the bases loaded in the sixth inning to draw the Silver Hawks within one. Finally, Tyson Van Winkle had a RBI single in the eighth to knot the game at 4-4.

However, the Dragons had the answer in the bottom of the eighth. Diogenes Rosario (LP, 4-10) had pitched two perfect innings, but allowed a leadoff single to Ronald Torreyes and a one out double to Alex Oliveras. After an intentional walk to Fleury, David Vidal drove a double off the wall in left, putting the Dragons in front for good at 6-4.

Van Winkle led the offense with three hits and the RBI. No one else on the Silver Hawks had more than one hit as the team left 11 runners on base in the fourth straight loss to the Dragons over the last week and a half.

The Silver Hawks wrap up the season with a Labor Day matinee at 2:00 PM Eastern Time at Fifth Third Field in Dayton, Ohio. LHP Mike Belfiore (3-10, 3.93 ERA) is expected to start for South Bend while Dayton is supposed to counter with RHP Edinson Volquez (0-0, 0.00 ERA), who is on loan from the Cincinnati Reds as he recovers from Tommy John surgery. If Volquez does not start, RHP Ricky Bowen (5-8, 5.38 ERA) will start in his place. Pregame coverage begins at 1:40 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com .
