EASTLAKE, OH - The Lake County Captains (33-36; 77-61) defeated the Lansing Lugnuts (33-36; 69-69), 8-6, in Game 1 of a Sunday doubleheader at Classic Park, eliminating Lansing from postseason contention and clinching a playoff berth for the West Michigan Whitecaps.
In Game 2, Lugnuts starter Daniel Webb came within an out of a seven-inning no-hitter as the Lugs topped the Captains, 3-1, to earn a doubleheader split.
Captains left fielder Chase Burnette played a huge role in both outcomes, capping off a five-run fifth inning in the opener with a two-run homer off of reliever Steve Turnbull. The rally turned a 5-3 deficit into an 8-5 advantage for the home team.
Brian Slover (3-8) suffered the loss for Lansing, facing three batters in the fateful frame and allowing a walk and a single. It was Slover's fourth defeat of the season at the hands of the Captains.
Takafumi Nakamura (1-1) went 1 1/3 innings to pick up the win in relief of starter Jason Knapp, with Preston Guilmet recording the final four outs for his 11th save.
Knapp struck out eight batters in 3 2/3 innings but also allowed four runs on four hits and four walks in the no-decision.
In the second game, the Lugnuts scored all of their runs in the second inning against loser Giovanni Soto (3-2) thanks to a Brad Glenn solo homer, a Jake Marisnick RBI double, and a successful double steal that saw Marisnick swipe home.
The rest of the game was headlined by Webb (1-1), who notched his first career win. The right-hander walked five batters, the last a two-out free pass handed out to Roberto Perez in the bottom of the seventh. Burnette followed with a liner into center field on a 1-1 pitch for a clean single.
Casey Beck relieved Webb and coaxed a game-ending groundout from pinch-hitter Greg Folgia to complete the doubleheader split.
Lake County's only run of the game came thanks to a dropped third strike in the first inning, a stolen base, a wild pitch, and a throwing error by catcher Sean Ochinko.
Lansing right-hander Casey Lawrence (0-1, 6.08) will start the final game of the season, a 1 p.m. Monday matinee, against Lake County right-hander Trey Haley (5-10, 5.77).
