Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA - With Clinton fighting for their playoff lives, Whit Merrifield belted a two-out, two-run homer in the seventh on Sunday afternoon to give his team the lead in a 6-4 Bees win at Community Field.
After Erasmo Ramirez, a Midwest League Postseason All-Star, left with his team up 4-3 in the seventh, and reliever Brandon Maurer came on with seven outs separating the LumberKings from clinching a spot in the Midwest League postseason. Merrifield pounded a hanging breaking ball over the left field fence for his fifth round-tripper of the season.
From there, the lead was Scott Kelley's (W, 1-3) to protect. The Penn State product did not allow a hit in three innings on the mound with a pair of walks and two strikeouts.
The Merrifield blast put the Bees up in what had been a back-and-forth affair. Clinton struck first with a run in the first on Nick Franklin's league-leading 23rd home run of the season, and Burlington knotted it up on Fernando Cruz's RBI double in the second. The LumberKings went up 2-1 in the top of the fourth on a Henry Contreras base knock, and the Bees immediately responded with two runs in the bottom half on RBI hits by Ben Theriot and Deivy Batista. Clinton rallied for two in the fifth to make it 4-3, which is where the score remained until Merrifield's at-bat in the seventh.
The loss kept Clinton's magic number at one for the time being, but they clinched a playoff spot later in the day when Cedar Rapids blew out Beloit, 13-5.
