Peoria Chiefs News Release
Davenport, IA -The Peoria Chiefs left nine runners on base and lost four others in a 1-0 loss to the Quad Cities River Bandits Sunday night. The loss drops the Chiefs to 32-35 on the half and 70-66 on the season with just one game remaining.
Quad Cities got on the board in the first inning against Frank Batista. Michael Swinson hit a roller down the first base line that went off the glove of Justin Bour and into foul territory and was somehow ruled as a double. Ross Smith followed with a double off the wall for a 1-0 lead before Batista escaped the inning.
The Chiefs left the bases loaded in both the second and third innings as Quad Cities kept their 1-0 lead. In the second against starter Daniel Bibona, the Chiefs loaded the bases with two outs. Bour doubled to start the frame and with two down, Anthony Giansanti walked and Luis Flores singled. But Bibona struck out Alvaro Ramirez to end the inning. Hak-Ju Lee started the third with a bunt single off reliever Justin Smith and Logan Watkins drew a walk. With one down, Bour singled sharply to right and Lee was held at third to load the bases. Smith struck out Jae-Hoon Ha and Matt Cerda flew out to deep center to end the inning with the bases loaded again.
The Chiefs threatened in the ninth against closer Jose Rada as Giansanti doubled with one out. After a groundout, Ramirez drove the ball deep to right but Frederick Parejo made an outstanding running catch toward the warning track to end the game.
Batista (2-5) allowed just one run on three hits over five and 2/3 innings. He walked two and struck out six. Danny Keefe allowed one hit and one walk while striking out two in two 1/3 shutout innings.
Casey's General Store Player of the Game: Frank Batista (RHP) - Batista allowed just three hits, all doubles, over 5 2/3 innings while holding Quad Cities to one run. The run should have been unearned and he walked two while striking out six.
