Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
RICHMOND, VA - The Richmond Flying Squirrels held off the Reading Phillies, 5-4, in front of 6,194 at The Diamond on Tuesday night. With the victory, the Squirrels evened the three-game series at a game apiece.
Reigning Eastern League Batter of the Week, Tagg Bozied, led off the second for Reading and got the R-Phils started with a high-arching solo-home run to left field off of Squirrels' left-hander Clayton Tanner. John Suomi followed and singled on the next pitch. Tanner recorded the first two outs of the inning, but then walked Tuffy Gosewisch to put two aboard. Reading right-hander J.C. Ramirez used the opportunity to aid his own cause, sending a single back through the middle to plate Suomi for a 2-0 advantage.
The Squirrels came back to tie the game, 2-2, with a pair of runs against Ramirez in the fourth. With one out, Conor Gillaspie tripled into the right-field corner. Brandon Belt sent an infield-single to third base to score Gillaspie and advanced to third on a single from Thomas Neal. Brad Boyer's groundout plated Belt to tie the game.
Richmond raced in front for the first time with three runs to chase J.C. Ramirez in the fifth. All the runs came courtesy of a two-out rally started when Nick Noonan was walked by Ramirez. Four consecutive singles followed, with Gillaspie, Belt and Neal each contributing an RBI single as the Squirrels built a 5-2 lead. Neal's single proved to be the knockout blow for Ramirez.
Ramirez (3-4) departed to the loss after 4 2/3 innings. He was charged with five earned runs on eight hits, having walked one and struck out two.
Tanner (9-8) settled in and worked through six innings for the win. His final blemish came in the sixth when Cody Overbeck lifted a solo-home run to right field to cut the Richmond lead to 5-3. All told, Tanner conceded three runs on four hits, walked three and struck out five.
The R-Phils crept a run closer in the seventh against right-hander Daryl Maday. With one out, Kevin Nelson drilled a pinch-hit double. He scored to cut the lead to a lone run a batter later when Timo Perez singled back up the middle.
Left-hander Andy Sisco worked a scoreless eighth inning and handed it off to Right-hander Ronnie Ray for the ninth. Ray earned his third save of the season, punctuating the Richmond win by fanning Michael Spidale to end the ballgame.
The finale of the three-game series is scheduled for 7:05 PM on Wednesday night at The Diamond. LHP Jake Stevens (4-2, 2.26) will make a spot-start for Richmond against RHP Austin Hyatt (0-0, 5.40) for Reading.
