Fisher Cats Go Extra Innings to Beat Trenton Again

(Trenton, NJ)--- Catcher Matt Liuzza hit a two-run home run in the top of the 11th inning, his second home run of the game, and the Fisher Cats went on to a 10-5 win over Trenton at Waterfront Park on Tuesday night.
With the win,New Hampshire now trails the first place Thunder by one-and-a-half games. The teams have one more meeting in the regular season-tomorrow night---with home field advantage in the upcoming playoffs at stake.
In the decisive frame, Adam Loewen (2-for-4) led off with a walk before Liuzza blasted his second homer of the game off losing pitcher Wilkins Arias (3-3) to make it 7-5. New Hampshire then loaded the bases on a single by Jonathan Diaz (3-for-4, 2 R, BB), and walks to Darin Mastroianni and Adeiny Hechavarria. Eric Thames drove in a run with a single, Callix Crabbe followed with a single and Adam Calderone's sacrifice fly made it 10-5.
Ronald Uviedo (4-5) earned the win with two innings of scoreless relief, working around a bases loaded one-out jam in the bottom of the ninth inning by striking out Justin Christian and getting Austin Krum to fly out. Alan Farina finished up, working around a single in the bottom of the 11th inning.
The Fisher Cats (74-54) scored a run in the top of the first inning. Mastroianni walked and moved to second on a sacrifice by Hechavarria. He took third on an error by Thunder starter Dellin Betances on a pickoff attempt and scored from third on what was a dropped third strike with Eric Thames (2-for-6) at the plate.
Liuzza hit his first homer of the game and second of the season for New Hampshire in the top of the third inning. The solo shot made it 2-0.
Trenton (76-53) picked up its first run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Christian walked and stole second. Austin Krum walked. After Daniel Brewer's fly out, Christian moved to third. He scored on a fielders choice grounder by Austin Romine (3-for-5, 2 RBI).
Thunder starter Betances allowed two runs (one earned) in 4.2 IP in his Eastern League debut. He struck out eight. After J.B. Cox got the final out of the fifth inning, Trenton turned the game over to rehabbing Major Leaguer Alfredo Aceves. The 27-year old has been on the shelf since early May due to a lower back injury and the Fisher Cats hit him hard.
New Hampshire put together three consecutive doubles in the top of the sixth by Adam Calderone, David Cooper and Adam Loewen to make it 4-1.
Trenton picked up a run against Fisher Cats reliever Vince Bongiovanni in the sixth on a walk to Christian and a double by Dan Brewer.
New Hampshire then put together two more doubles against Aceves by Diaz and Hechavarria in the top of the seventh to make it 5-2.
But Trenton rallied to tie the game with three in the bottom of the eighth inning off Trystan Magnuson. Luis Nunez reached on an infield single, moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a double by Christian to make it 5-3. After Krum grounded out, Brewer singled, scoring Christian. Brewer advanced to second on an error and scored on a single by Romine to tie the game at 5-5.
The series with Trenton concludes tomorrow night at 7:05pm. New Hampshire is expected to starter RHP Randy Boone (4-8, 3.83) against Trenton RHP Adam Warren (4-2, 3.29). The game can be heard on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network at 6:45pm with Dave Collins.
