Dayton, Ohio-The Dayton Dragons announced today that former National League Rookie of the Year Tommy Helms will serve as guest commentator on Dragons television broadcasts on Friday, July 23 and Saturday, July 24. The games can be seen on WHIO Digital Channel 7.2 (Channel 23 on most Time Warner Cable systems) starting at 7:00 p.m. Dragons Director of Broadcasting Tom Nichols will handle play-by-play.

Helms played, coached, and managed the Cincinnati Reds and was inducted into the Reds Hall-of-Fame in 1979. He won the Rookie of the Year award in 1966 and represented the Reds in the All-Star Game in both 1967 and '68. He won the National League Gold Glove Award in 1970 and '71 as the second baseman for the Reds. Helms was a key member of the Reds 1970 National League pennant winners that went on the World Series against the Baltimore Orioles. The '70 World Series is remembered for the performance of Orioles third baseman Brooks Robinson, who enjoyed arguably the greatest defensive World Series in baseball history.

Helms also played for the Houston Astros, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Boston Red Sox as part of a 14-year Major League career. Helms served as a coach for the Reds for seven seasons from 1983-'89 and briefly managed the Reds in 1989.

The Dragons host the Cedar Rapids Kernels tonight and tomorrow (Friday) at Fifth Third Field. Both games start at 7:00 p.m. (1410 WING; www.daytondragons.com). The Quad Cities River Bandits visit Dayton for a three-game set starting Saturday.
