Spikes' Sticks Stifled by Scrappers

July 20, 2010 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
State College Spikes News Release

STATE COLLEGE - State College Spikes bats were frustrated as the Mahoning Valley Scrappers held them to just four hits and downed the Spikes, 4-0, on Tuesday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

State College (16-16) notched two of its hits in the same inning, when Chase Lyles singled and Walker Gourley doubled. However, Lyles was thrown out at home on Gourley's two-base hit, ending the Spikes' biggest scoring threat. Matt Curry also singled in the fourth inning to extend his on-base streak to 17 games. Curry was named the New York-Penn League's Player of the Week for July 12-18 on Monday.

While Mahoning Valley (13-19) starter Alex Kaminsky (4-1) was doing his part to hold State College at bay, the Scrappers notched a first-inning run off of Zack Von Rosenberg (1-5) to take an early lead. Dan DeGeorge then doubled home a pair of runs in the second to up the Mahoning Valley advantage, with an RBI groundout from Jordan Casas completing the scoring in the fourth inning.

Von Rosenberg made his third straight five-inning start, yielding four runs on eight hits and a walk in the loss. The right-hander also struck out two Scrappers hitters.

Kaminsky reduced his ERA to 2.04, seventh-best in the New-York Penn League, and allowed just three hits and two walks over five innings while striking out four. Clayton Ehlert then finished the game striking out five batters in a perfect two innings of work.

Wednesday, the Spikes face the Scrappers at 7:05 p.m. at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park to complete their two-game mini-series. State College will send right-hander Quinton Miller (0-1) to the mound for the fourth start of his minor league rehabilitation assignment. Last time out, Miller took the loss against Connecticut despite allowing only two unearned runs in five innings of work. Mahoning Valley will respond with left-hander Michael Rayl (0-3). Rayl makes his seventh start on the year, and has posted a 1.84 ERA away from home.

It's also a Half-Price Wednesday at the ballpark, presented by Froggy 101, with half-price Outfield Bleacher tickets and half-price drink specials from 6-8 p.m., as well as half-price soda specials all game long. Fans can also bring their hidden treasures out to the park to be appraised by Will Fluman of Apple Hill Antiques on Antique Night, and the Spikes will pay tribute to the 50th anniversary of "The Flintstones" with a Salute to Prehistoric Times.

Wednesday's game will also kick off the 2010 Centre County United Way Partner Agency Series, spotlighting some of the agencies that help our local communities. Plus, the Spikes and the PA Breast Cancer Coalition will hold the annual "Take a Swing Against Breast Cancer Home Run Derby" at the ballpark from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
