Jamestown Jammers News Release

JAMESTOWN, N.Y. - Jonathan Jones' bloop single off Grant Dayton in the top of the eighth inning plated the winning run as the Jammers lost to the Auburn Doubledays, 8-7. They are now 19-13, 0.5 games back of first-place Williamsport.

Jones was a thorn in the Jammers' side all night, going 3-for-5 with three singles, two runs scored and two RBIs. Dayton dropped to 1-1 with the loss.

Jamestown took an early 4-0 lead in the second inning. Wilfredo Gimenez hit a two-run double and Brent Keys and Danny Black followed with RBI hits. But the Doubledays fought back with four runs in the third inning to tie the game and one in the fourth to take a 5-4 lead. Black committed an error in each frame and the Jammers had three errors on the night.

All five runs were charged to starter Rett Varner, who went 3.1 innings in his second start of the season for the Jammers. Only two of the runs were earned.

Auburn scored two more in the top of the sixth to take a 7-4 lead before Jamestown tied the game in the bottom of the seventh. Black scored on an error by Doubledays first baseman Lance Durham and Marcell Ozuna hit a two-run home run over the batter's eye in center field to tie the game at 7-7.

Then Jones singled in the eventual winning run in the top of the next inning. The Jammers mustered just one hit over the final two innings, a two-out single by Brent Keys in the eighth.

Jamestown and Auburn will conclude their two-game series Wednesday night at 7:05 pm. Josh Hodges will start for the Jammers against Daniel Webb for the Doubledays.
