Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
NORWICH, CT --- PJ Polk's RBI single in the bottom of fhe seventh inning gave the Connecticut Tigers a 2-1 New York-Penn League victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters in the opener of a three-game series at Dodd Stadium on Tuesday night.
With two outs in the seventh, Ryan Soares doubled off Vermont reliever Colin Bates and then scored on Polk's line drive single to snap a 1-1 tie. The Lake Monsters got back-to-back singles to open the ninth inning and a sacrifice bunt then put the go ahead run at second base with one out. But Tigers reliever Tyler White came on to struckout Kevin Keyes and Chad Mozingo to end the game.
Connecticut had taken a 1-0 lead in the first as Polk led off with an infield single to short and advanced to second on a throwing error by Jason Martinson. After a sacrifice bunt, Matt Perry smacked an RBI single to left to score Polk with an unearned run.
Vermont tied the game in the third as Martinson singled with one out and David Freitas followed with an RBI double to left field. Freitas had earlier singled in the first inning to extend his hitting streak to 16 games, the third longest in Lake Monsters history and two games short of the record 18-game hit streaks for Geoff Blum in 1994 and Jason Tuttle in 2003.
Bobby Hansen allowed one unearned run on five hits with one walk and five strikeouts over six innings for Vermont, while Bates (2-1) gave up the winning run on two hits in his two innings to take the loss. Tigers reliever Miguel Mejia (1-0) retired all nine batters he faced in three innings of work for the victory, while the save was the first of the season for White. Ronnie LaBrie and Freitas both had two hits for Vermont, while Chris Sedon and Polk both had a pair of hits for Connecticut.
Coupled with a 9-5 loss to Staten Island on Sunday in their last game, the Lake Monsters have now lost two straight games for just the second time this season and also lost for the first time when holding their opponent to two runs or less (had been 11-0).
Despite the loss, Vermont (21-10) still leads the Stedler Division by five games over Connecticut (16-15). The two teams will play the second of the three-game series at Connecticut on Wednesday. After the series finale on Thursday, the Lake Monsters will return home to historic Centennial Field on Friday night against Lowell.
