Loons Power Past Hawks in Second Half Opener
June 25, 2010 - Midwest League (MWL1)
South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
Midland, MI - The Great Lakes Loons hit four home runs to rout the Silver Hawks 11-2 on Friday night at Dow Diamond in the opener to the second half of the Midwest League season. With the loss, South Bend falls to 0-13 against the Loons in 2010 and just 2-27 against Great Lakes since the start of the 2009 season.
The loss also sends the Silver Hawks to nine games under the .500 mark for the season at 30-39. This ties the low water mark from the first half, when South Bend started 0-9 and was also 1-10 before finally stringing some wins together.
The home run onslaught began in the bottom of the second after the Silver Hawks had taken a 1-0 lead. J.T. Wise tied the game with a sacrifice fly before Rafael Ynoa gave the Loons a 4-1 lead with a three run shot to right - his second home run of the season.
The Loons scored two more runs in the third inning against South Bend starter Scottie Allen (LP, 2-2), who would allow six runs in only 4.0 innings on the mound.
Reliever Randy Rodriguez (ND) didn't fare much better in the fifth, allowing a home run to Brian Cavazos-Galvez, the first batter he faced. After Andrew Fie homered for South Bend in the top of the sixth, Chris Jacobs took Rodriguez deep in the bottom of the inning for another solo blast to give the Loons an 8-2 lead.
Blake Smith got into the act in the eighth with a three run homer against Rafael Quezada (ND), who has now allowed runs in 12 of his 18 appearances this season.
Ramon Castillo had the early RBI for South Bend (his first of the season), when his double drove home Alberto Diaz. Diaz had started the rally with a triple off of Josh Wall (WP, 3-4).
Fie's blast in the sixth was his second home run of the season, and his first since June 1st against the Peoria Chiefs.
The first four hitters in the South Bend lineup combined to go 0-for-15 with seven strikeouts and two walks. South Bend struck out 14 times as a team.
The series continues with game two Saturday evening at 7:05 PM from Dow Diamond in Midland, Michigan. RHP Brad Gemberling (1-4, 4.38 ERA) will get the starting nod for South Bend while the Loons will go with RHP Brett Wallach (4-0, 3.93 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 6:45 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
