Trenton Thunder News Release
Reading, PA - Despite giving up five runs in the seventh inning, the Thunder were able to hold on, defeating the Reading Phillies 9-7 at FirstEnergy Park on Thursday night. With the win, the Thunder improve to 35-23 and move into sole possession of first place in the Eastern Division.
Trenton fell behind early, as Tagg Bozeid hit a two run home run in the first inning off LHP Wilkin de la Rosa. However, the 2-0 Reading lead did not last long, as Trenton scored seven runs on six hits in the second inning off LHP Yohan Flande (3-5). The scoring was capped off by a three-run homer from Brandon Laird.
Trenton scored two more runs in the third inning, as Justin Christian hit a two-out, two-run triple, scoring Edwar Gonzalez and Justin Snyder to give the Thunder a 9-2 lead. Flande would be lifted for RHP Jason Anderson after the hit.
RHP Ryan Pope (2-3) came on in relief for de la Rosa and allowed just two hits and struck out two over 2 2/3 innings of work. RHP Grant Duff came on in the bottom of the seventh inning and after getting his first batter to ground out, Duff then surrendered five runs, all unearned, on three hits, highlighted by a three-run home run to left field by Kevin Nelson to cut the Thunder lead to 9-7. A fielding error by Justin Snyder lead to all runs being unearned.
The R-Phils were able to bring the go-ahead run to the plate in the eighth inning, but RHP Eric Wordekemper was able to get out of the inning unscathed. Wordekemper would retire the side in the ninth inning to end the game.
The Thunder return home to Waterfront Park and will open up a weekend series with the Binghamton Mets on Friday night at 7:05 PM. RHP Lance Pendleton will start for the Thunder, while Binghamton goes with LHP Eric Niesen.
