
Sea Dogs Swept in Doubleheader by Thunder

Portland, Maine - The Portland Sea Dogs (22-19) were swept by the Trenton Thunder (24-17) in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Hadlock Field in front of a sold out crowd of 7,378. The Sea Dogs fell 8-6 in ten innings in game one. Trenton edged the Sea Dogs 3-2 in game 2.
Luis Nunez hit a three run homer in the tenth inning to lift the Trenton Thunder to an 8-6 victory over the Sea Dogs in game one. Josh Schmidt (3-0) picked-up the win for the Thunder tossing 2.2 innings allowing one run on three hits.
Portland and Trenton battled back-and-forth in the twinbill opener, combining for 22 hits and five homers. Trailing 1-0, the Sea Dogs scored twice off Hector Noesi in the first inning, thanks to an error by first baseman Kevin Smith and a run-scoring single from Anthony Rizzo.
The teams exchanged runs in the third inning, but Portland took a 5-3 lead on homers by Nate Spears and Ryan Kalish. Trenton responded in the fourth inning when Justin Christian struck a 2-run homer with two-outs to left-center field.
Pitching took over for the next five innings for both sides as the scored remained tied at 5-5 until Nunez hit a three run homer in the tenth of Portland reliever Jason Rice (0-1).
Eammon Portice was strong out of the pen for the Sea Dogs tossing four scoreless innings allowing just two hits and two walks.
Portland starter Stephen Fife took a no-decision for the 'Dogs, yielding five runs on seven hits in five innings pitched.
Kalish stood out offensively for the Dogs collecting three hits including the home run, two RBI, and two runs scored.
In game two the Sea Dogs would fall victim to the three-run home run again. This time it was Justin Snyder's fifth inning shot into the U.S. Cellular Pavilion that gave the Trenton Thunder the 3-2 win at Hadlock Field.
Newcomer Jeremy Kehrt took the mound for Portland in the second game of the doubleheader after being called up from Single-A Salem Friday.
The 24-year old righty started strong for the home team, retiring the first six hitters he faced and tossing 4.1 scoreless innings before Snyder launched his first home run of the season to give Trenton the 3-2 lead.
The three-run shot would be the only blemish for Kehrt, who allowed the three earned runs on six hits over five innings while striking out three.
Portland would plate two in the bottom of the third inning to take the early lead. Noel Castillo came in for Trenton starter De La Rosa and inherited runners on first and second. After a wild pitch advanced both runners and a walk to Ray Chang, Yamaico Navarro would lace a two-run single into left-center field.
Navarro's single would give the Sea Dogs a 2-0 lead and would close the book on De La Rosa who went 2.2 innings allowing two runs, two hits, two walks, two hit batsman, with two strikeouts.
Castillo would settle in after allowing the single to Navarro holding Portland scoreless over 2.1 innings of work allowing three hits and striking out three to pick up the his third win of the season.
Bryce Cox would throw two perfect innings in relief of Kehrt while striking out a season-high four batters.
Eric Wordekamper matched Cox with two perfect innings of his own while striking out one to record his fifth save of the season.
The Sea Dogs and Thunder conclude the four game series Sunday afternoon at Hadlock Field at 1:00 PM. Robert Coello (4-1) will make his first start for the Sea Dogs after pitching out of the bullpen all season.
