Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, IA - The bat of Nick Franklin helped Clinton claim a 3-1 victory in the resumption of last night's suspended game, but he and the rest of the offense couldn't come back as Kane County split the day's action with a 6-3 win in game two.

After rain stopped play with a 0-0 tie in the fourth inning, play resumed with the Cougars grabbing a 1-0 lead. Right-hander Erasmo Ramirez got two quick outs, but yielded three-straight singles including an RBI single to right from Mike Gilmartin.

Franklin tied the score at 1-1 in the sixth, lifting a solo shot to the Lumber Lounge off Cougars' righty Connor Hoehn. Franklin would then single to lead off the eighth inning, eventually scoring the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly to center by Dennis Raben. James Jones added an RBI single in the frame as well, plating Mario Martinez with a liner to center.

Lefty Brian Moran (W, 1-0) pitched 1.1 scoreless innings in relief of Ramirez to get the win. Cougars' left-hander A.J. Huttenlocker (L, 1-1) surrendered two runs over 2.0 innings in the losing effort.

Kane County jumped out to a 2-0 lead against right-hander Tyler Blandford in the second game, getting RBI doubles from Kent Walton and Leonardo Gil. Both runs were unearned to Blandford (L, 0-2), who gave up four hits and struck out five over 4.0 innings.

Clinton cut the deficit to 2-1 as Daniel Carroll walked to lead off the third, moved to third base on a single by Gabriel Noriega and scored on Franklin's sacrifice fly to center. However, Kane County answered with back-to-back home runs by Gil and Max Stassi off right-hander John Housey in the sixth.

Trailing 4-1, the LumberKings put together a two-run rally in the bottom of the sixth. Vinnie Catricala stroked a double to the left-center gap and scored on a Kalian Sams triple off the wall in right. Jones sent Sams home with an infield single to make it a one-run game again.

Unfortunately, that would be as close as Clinton got. The Cougars added two more runs on right-hander Daniel Cooper as Anthony Aliotti singled home a pair with one out in the seventh. The 6-3 lead turned out to be enough as right-hander Jose Guzman (S, 2) struck out Martinez with a man on to end the game.

Right-hander Dan Straily (W, 2-0) got the second-game victory, allowing a run on two hits over 5.0 innings.

After an off-day on Monday, the LumberKings (8-10) head to the road to take on the Cedar Rapids Kernels. Left-hander Jon Hesketh (1-1, 10.95) is slated to make his fourth start in the series opener at Perfect Game Field, first pitch scheduled for 6:35 PM.
