South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
Comstock Park, MI - South Bend starter Eric Smith (WP, 2-1) tossed 7.0 scoreless innings in leading the South Bend Silver Hawks to their seventh straight victory with a 5-1 defeat of the West Michigan Whitecaps on Sunday afternoon.
Smith has now thrown a team-high 21.0 consecutive scoreless innings and has not been scored upon at all in his last three starts. The right hander from the University of Rhode Island lowered his ERA to 0.75 by allowing just four hits and striking out five on Sunday.
The Silver Hawks jumped all over West Michigan starter Victor Larez (LP, 1-3) for two runs on three hits in the top of the first. Keon Broxton led off the game with a single to center and moved to third on a double from Chris Owings. Bobby Borchering followed with a single to left for his team-leading 10th RBI of the season and the 1-0 lead. Matt Davidson followed with a sacrifice fly, bringing home Owings to make it 2-0.
Davidson played long ball in the sixth inning, extending the Silver Hawks lead to 3-0. On the first pitch of his at bat, Davidson crushed a Larez fastball deep over the wall in left for his first home run of the season. The homer also extended his team high hitting streak to 10 games.
Davidson provided the RBIs again in the eighth, blasting a double off the wall in left for the 5-0 lead.
West Michigan got their lone run in the bottom of the ninth against Rafael Quezada (ND) when Jordan Lennerton hit an opposite field home run to left.
Bobby Stone stole the defensive highlights in the ninth, flipping over a railing while making a running catch in foul territory. Stone, who fell five feet to the concrete below, emerged from the fall a little dirty but otherwise unscathed as he received a nice round of applause from the West Michigan fans.
After an off day on Monday, the Silver Hawks continue the road trip with a series in Fort Wayne beginning on Tuesday night. Game time is scheduled for 7:05 PM Eastern Time Tuesday with RHP Chase Anderson (1-2, 2.70 ERA) starting for South Bend against Fort Wayne's RHP Dexter Carter (1-2, 6.28 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 6:45 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
