Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington, IA (April 24, 2010) - The Burlington Bees battled back from an early three-run deficit and Ryan Stovall turned in a three-hit effort, but Casey Haerther and the Cedar Rapids Kernels were too much to handle, taking the series finale 7-6.

Haerther provided the game's deciding blow, a three-run home run in the top of the eighth that put Cedar Rapids up 7-5. Harold Mozingo served up the big fly on his first pitch after entering the game in relief of Dusty Odenbach (L, 1-1).

The Bees had an opportunity to tie or win in the bottom of the ninth. Fernando Cruz singled and eventually scored on a passed ball to make it a one-run game. Gerard Hall walked, stole second, and Deivy Batista picked up an infield single to give Burlington runners on the corners with two outs. Jon Bachanov (S, 2) then retired Wil Myers on one pitch to preserve the victory.

The Bees had taken a 5-4 lead in the sixth when Stovall cracked a double down the left field line after singles from Cruz and Rene Oriental.

The Kernels jumped on Bees starter Tyler Sample early, plating two runs in the first on what should have been a routine fly ball to center field. The wet conditions caused Carlo Testa to lose his footing, and the ball fell in to give Jose Jimenez a two-run double.

Cedar Rapids played small ball in the second when Eric Oliver was hit by a pitch, reached third on a hit-and-run, and scored as Michael Wing executed a safety squeeze to perfection to give the Kernels a 3-0 lead.

Joey Lewis led the Bees to a four-run third inning, driving a bases-loaded double over the head of center fielder Matt Long. All three runners scored and the Bees led 4-3 after an earlier Batista sacrifice fly plated the first run.

Haerther tied the game at four in the fourth when he walked and later scored on a wild pitch.

Patrick Corbin (W, 3-0) allowed five earned runs on eight hits in seven innings.

The Bees open a three-game series with the Beloit Snappers on Monday at Community Field. Enjoy Dollar Monday specials courtesy of Miller Lite!
