Late Lead Slips Away As Silver Hawks Remain Winless
April 13, 2010 - Midwest League (MWL1)
South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN - Down to their final strike, the Lake County Captains scored three runs with two outs in the top of the ninth, winning 7-5 and handing the South Bend Silver Hawks their sixth straight loss to begin the year.
South Bend entered play as one of seven teams in Minor League Baseball yet to record a victory, but it certainly looked like they were going to get the first one on Tuesday. Taking a 5-4 lead to the top of the ninth, Lake County scored three times against Yonata Ortega (LP, 0-1) and the Captains remain a perfect 6-0 on the year.
With a 1-2 count and two outs, Bo Greenwell lined a double into left-center to plate the tying and go-ahead runs in the top of the ninth. Greg Folgia followed with a RBI single to put the final margin at 7-5.
The swing in the ninth represented the third lead change in the final five innings, as the two teams battled back and forth all morning and afternoon on a School Day at the Cove.
South Bend took an early 3-0 lead after two innings with Chris Owings' RBI double in the first and Keon Broxton's RBI triple in the second.
Lake County bounced back with two runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth on RBI doubles from Jeremie Tice and Greenwell for the 4-3 lead.
David Nick's solo home run stayed just inside the left field foul pole in the bottom of the sixth and tied the game at 4-4. The home run represented Nick's first of the season and the first of the year for the Silver Hawks. South Bend added another run later in the sixth inning when Errol Hollinger's first hit of the season fell in front of Delvi Cid in center field, scoring Matt Davidson to put the Silver Hawks up 5-4.
Diogenes Rosario (ND) pitched 2.2 scoreless innings for the Silver Hawks in relief, before turning it over to Ortega for the 8th and 9th innings.
Reliever Francisco Jimenez (WP, 2-0) pitched 2.1 scoreless innings for Lake County for the win, with Cory Burns (SV, 3) picking up his second save in as many days.
The Silver Hawks head out on their first road trip of the year Wednesday, traveling to Midland, Michigan and Dayton, Ohio for the next six games. Wednesday's road opener against the Great Lakes Loons begins at 6:05 PM Eastern Time with RHP Charles Brewer (0-1, 3.86 ERA) on the hill in a rematch against Loons RHP Brett Wallach (1-0, 0.00 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 5:45 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com .
