Drive Can't Figure Out \'Birds Bullpen, Fall 6-4
April 11, 2010 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - The Drive found themselves in a good position Saturday night at Fluor Field. Although they trailed 4-3 after three innings to the Shorebirds, they were producing off the Orioles top pick from a year ago, right-hander Matt Hobgood - fifth overall selection.
However, Hobgood tossed a scoreless fourth in his final inning, before turning it over to the bullpen as the Shorebirds claimed a 6-4 victory.
For the second straight night, Delmarva relievers cooled the Drive's bats as Nick Haughian (1-0) and Randy Henry combined on four shutout frames. If it weren't for an unearned run in the ninth, the baby birds' relievers would have tossed 10.0 scoreless innings over the last two nights.
Again the Shorebirds amassed a 2-0 lead in their first at bat, tagging Manuel Rivera (0-1) for three hits including a double and a triple. After being sent down in the home half of the first, the Drive answered by tying the game in the second.
With two outs, Greenville took advantage as Hobgood lost his command. Reymond Fuentes drew a walk and raced around the bases on Jeremy Hazelbaker's double to deep centerfield. Hazelbaker showed off his speed by swiping third and scoring on a wild pitch.
Delmarva quickly regained their two-run advantage, plating a pair in the top of the third. T.J. Baxter laced his second double in as many at bats, and eventually scored on Levi Carolus' groundout. Tyler Kolodny later added a home run to left.
The Drive cut their deficit to a run in the bottom of the third on Wilkerson's second RBI of the night, a two-out single.
But the Drive wouldn't score again until the ninth, meanwhile the Shorebirds added two insurance runs by scoring in the sixth and seventh innings. Former South Carolina Gamecock catcher Justin Dalles belted a towering homer to straight away centerfield in the seventh.
The Drive will look to split the first four-game series with the Shorebirds when they meet in the finale Sunday at 4:05 PM. Right-hander Roman Mendez and right-hander Jesse Beal of Greenville and Delmarva, respectively, will make their season debuts at Fluor Field.
As Opening Week, presented by Carolina First, continues tomorrow at Fluor Field it will be Sunday Family FunDay at the ballpark. Following the game, kids will have the opportunity to run the bases.
