Adirondack Phantoms News Release
SYRACUSE, NY - The Adirondack Phantoms scored first, but the Syracuse Crunch scored six unanswered goals to earn a 6-1 win on Saturday night at the Onondaga County War Memorial at Oncenter.
It did not take long for the Phantoms to grab the lead as they caught the Crunch flat-footed in the defensive zone. Lukas Kaspar reacted where everyone else stood still, jumping on a loose puck that sat behind the net from Jonathon Kalinski's slap shot. Kaspar swooped around the far post and wrapped the puck into the net at 1:34 to give Adirondack an early 1-0 lead. The two teams traded a few chances through the rest of the period, but combined for just 13 total shots on goal.
Syracuse responded with an energetic second period and quickly erased the Phantoms lead by scoring two goals over the span of just 13 seconds. Pascal Pelletier tied the game with a one-timer at 1:25 and then on the ensuing face off Kevin Harvey centered the puck to Stefan Legein for a tip-in goal at 1:38. The Crunch took a 3-1 lead when Tom Sestito scored on a rebound from just outside the crease at 6:47. Jared Aulin gave Syracuse a three-goal lead at 13:09 as he skated down the right side, cut the middle and then snapped a shot back across the grain and into the top right corner of the net. The Crunch out-shot Adirondack 16-12 in the middle stanza and found themselves with a 4-1 advantage on the scoreboard.
Syracuse added two more goals in the third period as they earned their first win of the season. Derek MacKenzie blasted home a one-timer for a power play goal at 11:01, assisted by Pascal Pelletier and Nick St. Pierre. Pelletier then set up the final goal, lifting a backhand pass from the left corner into the path of Dan Fritsche, who fired a shot off the inside of the right post and into the net to complete the scoring at 18:29.
Crunch goaltender Kevin Lalande recorded his first win of the season, stopping 25-of-26 shots to help Syracuse improve to 1-2-0-0. Adirondack starter Johan Backlund made 31 saves on 37 shots, but took the loss as the Phantoms record dropped to 1-2-0-0 on the year. The Crunch out-shot Adirondack 37-26 in the game and went 1-for-5 on the power play; the Phantoms were 0-for-3 with the man-advantage.
Adirondack now returns home to prepare for a busy three-game weekend. Friday, October 16th at 7:30 pm the Phantoms host the defending Calder Cup champion Hershey Bears at the Glens Falls Civic Center. Saturday, October 17th marks the beginning of the Times Warner Cable Cup series with the Albany River Rats; face off is scheduled for 7:00 pm in Glens Falls.
