Portland Winterhawks News Release

Six different Winterhawks found the back of the net during their home opener at the Memorial Coliseum Saturday as the Winterhawks defeated Seattle by a score of 6-1.

Portland's Chris Francis got the scoring started during the second period at the 3:11 mark by firing the puck past Seattle's Jacob De Serres for his second goal of the season to give the Winterhawks a 1-0 lead. The Thunderbirds came back later in the period, tying the score at 1-1 at the 17:08 mark in the second period when Prab Rai put the puck past Portland goaltender Kurtis Mucha.

But after going into the third tied at 1-1, Portland exploded for five third period goals to put the game away. They opened the third period scoring when Colin Reddin went top shelf from the slot past De Serres' glove to make the score 2-1.

From there, the offense kept coming at Seattle. Luke Walker scored his fourth goal of the season at the 7:22 mark in the third period, and Jacob Berglund followed suit with a breakaway goal at 13:23 after a long pass from goaltender Kurtis Mucha past center ice sent Berglund away.

Stefan Schneider continued the scoring when he netted his first goal of the season at 14:52 in the third period with assists from Riley Boychuk and Daniel Johnston to push Portland's score to 5-1. Schneider returned the favor later in the period when he passed the puck to Boychuk, who swept around De Serres, and put the puck past the Seattle netminder to seal the 6-1 victory.

In his first game back in Portland this season, Mucha had a strong game between the posts with 17 saves on the evening.

Portland has opened the season with two wins over Seattle this far, outscoring the Thunderbirds 11-1.

Portland hits the ice again tomorrow when the Hawks take on the Prince George Cougars at the Memorial Coliseum at 5 p.m.
