Chilliwack Bruins News Release
Ryan Howse scored twice and added an assist as the Bruins earned a 4-1 road victory over the Seattle Thunderbirds Friday night. It was the Bruins (1-2-0-0) first win of the season.
First Period:
Seattle opened the scoring when California native Jon Parker took advantage of a Bruins defensive miscue and beat goaltender Mark Friesen with a backhand shot on a partial breakaway. Time of the goal was 6:35. Moments later the Bruins came close to tying the game when Tyler Stahl's point shot beat Seattle netminder Calvin Pickard but clanged harmlessly off the crossbar. The Bruins did get the equalizer when former Thunderbird Isak Quakenbush knocked in a puck that had bounced out in front off of the end boards. As the puck was crossing the goal line, Bruins forward Randy McNaught was pushed into the goal knocking it off its moorings. After a lengthy video review, the goal was allowed. Chilliwack then dodged a bullet when they killed off a 91 second two man advantage. The closest Seattle came to scoring during the 5 on 3 was when defenseman Jeremy Schappert's point shot hit the post. The first period ended tied at one. Final shots in the period favored Seattle 15-12.
Second Period
The Bruins spent four of the first four and a half minutes of the second period shorthanded but got through it unscathed. Chilliwack took the lead when Ryan Howse scored his second of the season. Howse picked up a Mitch McColm pass in the center ice area and broke in along the right wing on a 2 on 1 with Roman Horak. Using Horak as a decoy, Howse beat Pickard with a wrist shot to put the Bruins up 2-1. Howse then notched his second of the night with just under a minute to go in the middle frame. Howse started the play holding the puck along the right boards just inside the Seattle blueline. Howse spotted Bruins defenceman Brandon Manning coming off the bench and hit him in full stride as he broke towards the Thunderbird net. Drawing the defensemen over, Manning then returned the puck back to Howse who one timed his third of the season past Pickard. Mitch McColm also earned an assist on the play. Chilliwack led 3-1 after two. Shots in the second period were 13-8 in favor of the home team.
Third Period
The lone goal of the final period came off the stick of Bruins forward Roman Horak. Horak finished off a nifty passing play one timing a Ryan Howse feed past Pickard to put the Bruins up by three with 5:11 left in the third period. It was Horak's first WHL goal. Mitch Topping also picked up an assist. Chilliwack outshot Seattle 11-4 in the final 20 minutes.
Final shots on goal in the game were 32-31 in favor of Seattle. The Bruins were 0/3 with the man advantage and a perfect 6/6 on the penalty kill.
