7,894 Fans Watch Rock Cats Fall Short of Comeback

New Britain, CT - On Friday night, 7,894 fans - including New York Mets' General Manager Omar Minaya - filled the stands of New Britain Stadium to watch the Rock Cats fall just short of a dramatic ninth inning comeback as Binghamton escaped with a 4-3 win.

It was the 15th sellout of the 2008 season and second largest in stadium history, with the largest crowd coming back on July 12 of this season when 8,115 fans filed through the gates.

Brock Peterson gave the crowd something to cheer about with a solo home run in the bottom of the second that put the Rock Cats on the board, 1-0. The B-Mets answered back in the next inning. Jose Coronado (3-for-4) led off with a single and Jonathan Malo followed with a walk. Mike Carp then delivered a two-run triple to center field. Carp scored on a throwing error by shortstop Toby Gardenhire to put the B-Mets ahead, 3-1.

Carp added an RBI sacrifice fly in the fifth inning that scored Coronado - who had led off the inning with a double - to extend the lead, 4-1.The Rock Cats battled back in the bottom of the fifth. Erik Lis led off with a homer to left field to cut the lead in half, 4-2. Peterson later scored on a groundout by Drew Butera to bring the ‘Cats within one run.

Frank Mata kept the Rock Cats in the game with 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief. That set the stage for a possible comeback by the ‘Cats. In the bottom of the ninth, Lis drew a one-out walk. That brought Peterson - one of the hottest hitting Rock Cats of late - to the plate, but he was called out on strikes for the second out. Pinch hitter David Winfree brought the crowd to its feet with a double that moved Lis to third. The B-Mets' Eddie Kunz struck out Drew Butera to end the game. Kunz notched his 27th save of the season.

Bobby Parnell (10-6, 4.33) limited the Rock Cats to three runs on seven hits through six innings. For the Rock Cats, Kyle Aselton suffered the loss. Aselton (4-5, 4.42) allowed four runs and five hits through five innings.
