Fisher Cats win streak reaches five

June 27, 2008 - Eastern League (EL1)
New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release

Manchester, NH- Ricky Romero pitched one-run baseball over six innings, and Anthony Hatch hit his first home run since May 11 to help the New Hampshire Fisher Cats extend their season-high winning streak to five games with a 3-2 victory over the New Britain Rock Cats before a Friday night crowd of 6,479 at Merchantsauto.com Stadium.

New Britain (33-45) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning against Romero (4-4) when leadoff batter Luke Hughes (1-for-4, 2B, HBP, 2 R) doubled to left-centerfield, was sacrificed to third by Steve Tolleson (1-for-2, SAC, BB) and scored on a sacrifice fly by Danny Valencia (1-for-3, SF, RBI).

New Hampshire (32-46) took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning against losing pitcher Zach Ward on RBI singles from Scott Campbell (1-for-4, RBI) and Aaron Mathews (1-for-4, RBI). Campbell's single scored Hatch, who reached on a dropped fly ball by left fielder Erik Lis. Mathews' single scored Chris Gutierrez (0-for-1, R, HBP, BB), who was hit by a pitch.

Mathews preserved the 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning when he threw out Lis (1-for-4) trying to score from second base on a Drew Butera (1-for-3, BB) two-out single to center.

Romero (4-4) worked six-plus innings, allowing one run on seven hits. The left-hander struck out four and walked two, becoming the fifth straight Fisher Cats' starting pitcher to earn a victory -all against the Rock Cats.

Jared Gothreaux relieved Romero with runners on first and second base with no outs in the top of the seventh inning following consecutive singles from David Winfree (1-for-3, BB) and Dustin Martin (1-for-4). The right-hander worked out of the jam when Butera fouled out on a bunt attempt and Toby Gardenhire (1-for-4) grounded into an inning-ending double play.

Hatch (1-for-3, HR, 2 R) greeted reliever Robert Delaney with a solo home run, his sixth, over the rightfield wall in the bottom of the seventh inning to bump the Fisher Cats' lead to 3-1.

The Rock Cats drew to within 3-2 in the top of the eighth inning when Hughes was hit by a Gothreaux pitch and scored on a Brock Peterson (1-for-4, RBI) single to center. Daryl Harang struck out Lis, the only batter he faced, and Zach Dials retired Wintree on a fly out to end the inning.

Dials worked around a ninth inning walk to Butera to register a four-out save -his 12th of the year.

Ward (2-3) suffered the loss after allowing two runs -one earned- in six innings. The right-hander struck out five and walked one.

The Fisher Cats look for their sixth straight win against the Rock Cats when right-hander Julio Pinto (4-2, 7.52), just back from Advanced-A Dunedin, makes the start against New Britain left-hander Kyle Aselton (3-2, 5.03) Saturday night at 7:05pm. Radio coverage begins at 6:45pm on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Mike Murphy.

Following Saturday's game, fans will be treated to an Atlas Fireworks Show. For tickets, visit www.nhfishercats.com or call (603) 641-2005.
