Masterson Called Up to Boston, Hall Joins Sea Dogs

Portland, Maine- The Boston Red Sox today purchased the contract of right-handed pitcher Justin Masterson from the Portland Sea Dogs of the Eastern League. The 23-year-old made his major league debut this afternoon getting the start against the Angels this afternoon at Fenway Park. Outfielder Mickey Hall will join the Sea Dogs from Single-Lancaster. Hall will wear uniform # 19.

Masterson is 1-0 with a 0.95 ERA in four starts with the Sea Dogs this season. He has the Eastern League's 3rd lowest ERA and ranks 4th with 23 strikeouts. The right-hander has allowed a run in just one of his four starts. He was selected the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for opening week of the 2008 season. He is the fourth ranked prospect in the Red Sox organization, according to Baseball America. Masterson becomes the first player from the Red Sox' 2006 First Year Player Draft class to advance to the major leagues. He is 16-9 in 45 games in his three minor league seasons.

He is the 155th Sea Dog to appear in the Major Leagues. He is one of ten former Sea Dogs currently with the Boston Red Sox.

Masterson was scheduled to start tonight for the Portland Sea Dogs against the Binghamton Mets. Right-handed pitcher Kyle Jackson will get the start for Portland tonight.

Hall, 22 years-old, has appeared in 12 games for the Lancaster JetHawks hitting .216 with one home run and two RBI. Last season he set a career high hitting .285 in time split between Single-A Greenville and Single-A Lancaster. He hit safely in the final 18 games of the regular season raising his average to .301 in 82 games with Lancaster. Hall was selected by the Red Sox in the second round (54th overall) of the June 2003 draft.
