LOWELL, Mass. - Stephen Gionta scored twice, including the game winner midway through the third, as the Lowell Devils defeated the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 3-2 at Tsongas Arena Saturday night.
The Devils scored first, with Gionta getting credit for the tally off a Bridgeport defender at 9:16. Noah Clarke and Mark Fraser assisted on the goal. Rosario Ruggeri put the Devils up 2-0 later in the first, pinching in from the point and burying a power play marker at 16:47. Frank Doyle started between the pipes for the Devils, but saw little action in the first as Lowell held a 13-1 shot advantage in the frame.
Bridgeport stormed back in the second period to tie the score at 2-2. Justin Bourne cut the lead in half just 1:46 into the middle stanza with a shorthanded tally. In the final minute of the period Steve Regier notched the equalizer on the power play. Jordan Parise replaced Doyle at the 10:40 mark as both clubs switched goaltenders. Doyle finished with five saves on six shots.
Parise had a much busier night, facing 17 third period shots and 24 of the Sound Tigers 30 shots overall in the game. He had a perfect third period and surrendered just the lone goal in the second, paving the way for Gionta to regain the lead for Lowell. His second of the night came on the power play at 9:08. Two newcomers, Clarke and Jari Viuhkola, assisted on the goal, and both finished the night with a pair of helpers.
It was a productive week for the Gionta family. On Wednesday night, Stephen Gionta's older brother, Brian, recorded a hat trick for the New Jersey Devils in their 6-1 victory over the New York Islanders in pre-season NHL action at Tsongas Arena. The two brothers combined for five goals in two games in Lowell this week.
The Devils travel to Portland on Saturday, October 6th in their season opener, a 7:05 p.m. start from the Cumberland County Civic Center.
Lowell's regular season home opener is on Saturday, October 13th when they host the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at 7:05 p.m. Everyone in attendance will have the chance to win a 61" HDTV, courtesy of Best Buy in Nashua.
