Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH S.C. - Fresh off of a three-game sweep of the Salem Avalanche the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (34-34) ran into the best team in Class-A baseball, the Kinston Indians (46-22) on Friday night at Coastal Federal Field. Kinston held on to defeat the Birds, 2-1, to tie their franchise record for the most wins in a half with 46. Each of the four games of the current home stand have been decided by two runs or less.
After three innings of scoreless baseball the K-Tribe lit up the scoreboard in the top of the 4th inning thanks to one big swing of the bat. DH Rodney Choy Foo connected with his 1st home run of the season, a towering shot over the right field wall to put the Tribe up 1-0.
Kinston extended their lead an inning later, in the 5th, putting the Pelicans in a 2-0 hole. The lead off hitter, 3B Argenis Reyes, led off with a walk and proceeded to steal second base to get into scoring position. On the stolen base attempt Reyes moved to third on a throwing error by Pelicans C Steve Pyzik. Two batters later, LF Jordan Brown skied a deep fly ball to left field, a sacrifice fly, which scored Reyes and pushed the lead to 2-0.
Myrtle Beach made a late comeback attempt as they got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 8th inning. After a walk drawn by CF Carl Loadenthal, 2B Matt Young ripped a line drive into centerfield. Kinston CF Brian Barton had trouble fielding the ball, which allowed Loadenthal to wheel around the bases and step on home plate. Loadenthal's run cut the Tribe's lead to 2-1. The Pelicans had a golden chance to tie the game in the 9th, but the Indians held off the late surge and handed the Birds a loss in game one of the three-game series.
Pelicans starter Luis Atilano (L, 2-6) looked strong, but took the tough luck loss after giving up just two runs on six hits in six innings of work. He walked two and fanned one. Relievers Ralph Roberts and Brad Nelson worked three scoreless innings out of the pen. Kinston starter Joe Ness (W, 6-2) earned the victory thanks to 6.2 scoreless frames in which he allowed just three hits, while striking out five. Closer TJ Burton (S, 12) logged a save in a hairy 9th that saw the potential tying run stranded at third.
The Pelicans were paced at the plate by DH Mark Jurich, and Pyzik who each went 2-4. Young extended his on-base streak at home to 21 straight games with a 1-4 effort.
On Saturday night postgame fireworks will follow all of the action on the field. Also, the real Radio and Coach Jones from the motion picture "Radio" will be at the game for a meet and greet. Sunday afternoon features the Pelicans special Father's Day package. For tickets please call 843-918-6000 or purchase tickets online at myrtlebeachpelicans.com.
