Potomac Nationals News Release
Woodbridge, Va. - After getting snake bit in their last two games, the Nationals finally played the role of the rattler by keeping the Keys off the board all night on the back of a strong 8 2/3-inning performance by Mike Hinckley and Luke Montz's RBI sacrifice fly in the ninth scored the game's only run as the Nationals won 1-0 in the first game of the series.
Hinckley struck out five and allowed only two hits in the longest outing by a Nationals pitcher all season. He left the game with two outs in the ninth, leaving it up to Alex Morales (3-2) to get the final out, a strikeout of Nolan Reimold.
The Nationals threatened to score in the second with runners at first and second with one out, in the fifth with runners at second and third and one out, and again in the eighth with runners at the corners and one out. It was the leadoff double in the ninth by Brandon Powell that started the dagger into the Keys heart.
Powell doubled to right center then Cristian Guerrero was intentionally walked. Both runners then advanced on a double steal. Tony Blanco struck out swinging and Montz lifted a fly ball to medium left field. Jake Duncan came up throwing and threw off line and Powell scored before the ball arrived.
Garrett Olson pitched eight innings of shutout baseball, limited the Nationals to four hits while striking out eight. Casey Cahill struck out on the mound and was nailed with the loss, falling to 4-2.
The win combined with Lynchburg's loss keeps Potomac's playoff hopes alive as the magic number now falls to four. The Nationals need to win their next two games and need Lynchburg to lose both of theirs at Salem.
The game also marked the second debut of manager Edgar Caceres who led the 2004 Potomac Cannons to a playoff berth by winning that season's first half. Caceres was promoted to Potomac to fill the void left when Randy Knorr was promoted to Washington.
The Nationals and Keys get set for a Saturday night match-up as John Patterson makes his second rehab start of the season for Potomac and Dale City Volunteer Fire Department presents a post-game fireworks show. Game time is 7:05 p.m. Sunday's 1:05 p.m. start is Father's Day with The Electrical Alliance giving away hats to the first 1,000 fans with other great promotions going on during the day.
