Avalanche starter Ronnie Martinez worked a season high seven innings, and Salem rewarded him with his second win of the season as the Avalanche dealt Lynchburg a blow in their 3-1 win on Friday night.
Lynchburg came into the night with a one-game lead in the Northern Division with three games to play, but saw that lead disappear with the loss.
The Avalanche scored two runs in the seventh inning to break a 1-1 tie.
Salem 1B Scott Robinson doubled to lead off the inning. After RF Francisco Caraballo walked, C Jeff Mackor singled home Robinson to put Salem up for good.
The Avalanche continue their three-game series in Salem against Lynchburg Saturday night at 7:07 PM. Gates open at 5:30 PM for "Saturday Night Live" presented by Miller Lite as Fat Daddy will perform live.
The Blues Brothers will also make a guest appearance at the ballgame presented by The Comfort Inn - Roanoke Airport.
Tickets to the 2006 HCA Virginia Carolina-California League All Star Game presented by Lewis-Gale Medical Center to take place June 27th, in Salem are also available.
