Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Wilmington, DE --- The Wilmington Blue Rocks (33-35) opened up a three game series on Friday night with a 6-2 win over the Winston-Salem Warthogs (37-30), Carolina League affiliate of the Chicago White Sox. Blue Rocks starter Tommy Hottovy allowed just one run on two hits over 6.2 innings for the win. With the win and Lynchburg's loss the Blue Rocks move into a first place tie in the Northern Division with the Hillcats with two games remaining in the first half.
Hottovy (6-5) retired the first seven batters he faced to begin the ball game and did not allow a run until the seventh inning with Wilmington already leading 4-0. The one run came off the only walk Hottovy allowed, a one out walk to Chris Kelly.
Hottovy was able to get the next batter to pop out but was lifted for reliever Beau Vaughan because of a pitch count. Vaughan allowed a two-out RBI triple to David Cook, which allowed Kelly to score the first run for Winston-Salem.
Wilmington broke a scoreless tie in the third inning when Jeff Natale connected for a two-out, two-run single to give the Blue Rocks a 2-0 lead. Natale's hit came with the bases loaded scoring Jacoby Ellsbury and Bryan Pritz.
The Blue Rocks added another two runs in the fifth inning with both Ellsbury and Pritz again scoring. Natale came up to bat again with the bases loaded and connected for an RBI sacrifice fly to right scoring Ellsbury from third to make it 3-0. Pritz moved up to third on the sacrifice fly then came home to score when Jeff Corsaletti connected for a sacrifice fly to right for a 4-0 led.
The Blue Rocks added single runs in the seventh and eighth innings for 6-1 lead.
The Warthogs second run came in the ninth winning when Kelly connected for a two-out solo homer to left field, his 11th of the season. The home run came off reliever Justin Sturge, his first home run allowed this season, a span of 38.2 innings. Sturge pitched the ninth inning allowing two hits.
Vaughan pitched 1.1 innings in relief and allowed just one hit.
The Blue Rocks and Warthogs continue their series on Saturday night with Wilmington sending right-hander Scott Shoemaker (4-2, 4.34) to the mound. The Warthogs will counter with righty Carlos Torres (1-5, 6.07). Game time is at 6:05 p.m.
